At least twelve people died following an accident that occurred early morning on Friday, July 12 in Mwingi.
Preliminary reports indicate that a Mandera bound bus from Nairobi collided with a trailer along the Nairobi-Garissa Highway.
The conductor and driver of the bus, belonging to Makkah travels company, were among the individuals reported to have succumbed in the accident.
Moreover, first responders and well-wishers rushed to the scene to help rescue the victims.
According to survivors, the driver of the bus was trying to overtake an unknown vehicle which sped off after the accident. The vehicle veered off its lane and rammed into the near side of a trailer ferrying gypsum.
Further, they said that the trailer had stalled on the road because of a mechanical problem

Mandera Governor Mourns Victims
At the same time, Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif confirmed the incident, mourning the death of the passengers.
He sent his condolences to the affected families, praying that they get the strength to deal with such a difficult time.
“I am saddened to learn of an accident involving Makkah bus last night in Mwingi I send my condolences to the families of our brothers and sisters who have left us and the entire people of Mandera.
“I pray to Allah (SWT) to forgive their sins and admit them to Janatul Firdous, Ameen. Also, I pray to Allah to give the families of our brothers and sisters the strength to cope with their loss,” he stated.

Separate Thursday Accident
In a different location on Thursday, July 11, five people died in Maragua area in Murang’a along the Murang’a-Kenol Road after a salon car and a truck collided.
Police officers reported that the truck hit the salon car forcing it to veer off the road.
Consequently, all five individuals in the vehicle died on the spot, police said. They included a driver and four passengers.
Additionally, following the accident, residents in the area were up in arms demanding that speed bumps are erected in the area.
Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reveal that between January 1 to March 20 in 2024, 1,026 lives were lost as a result of road crashes.
Therefore, the authority explained that it means that fatalities as a result of road crashes have increased by 7 per cent compared to 956 that were lost in 2023 within the same period.
