Several people are feared dead following a tragic accident involving a matatu and two trailers along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
Sources present at the scene who spoke to The Kenya Times said the accident occurred at around 2:30 pm on Monday, May 20 at Hiriton near Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu County.
The accident involved a 14-seater matatu full of passengers operating under 3-NT Sacco. The matatu and one of the trailers were headed to Eldoret while the other trailer was headed in the opposite direction.
Reports indicate that the trailer that was headed to Nakuru lost control, collided with the matatu and the other trailer.
The matatu driver died on the spot alongside the passengers who occupied the front seats, while the truck driver survived with minor injuries.
Following the accident, witnesses reported traffic jam along the road, with vehicles forced to take other routes.
In photos seen by The Kenya Times, injured passengers are seen lying beside the road with their goods and personal belongings scattered all over.
The matatu crashed through the metal barriers beside the road after the collision and was pushed to the edge.
Residents present at the scene also surrounded the matatu, assisting passengers who were already out of the vehicle.
The source explained that the locals helped remove the bodies of the deceased individuals that were stuck in the matatu as they were waiting for assistance from the National Police or Kenya Redcross.

Waiyaki Way Accident
In a separate incident, a man narrowly escaped death after his car collided with a guardrail along Waiyaki Way. However, the cause of the accident, which also occurred on Monday along Redhill Road, was yet to be determined by press time.
A video circulating on social media depicted the guardrail penetrating the car’s windshield, the accident site, and bystanders aiding the driver.

According to eyewitnesses, the speeding car collided with the guardrail, causing it to pierce through the vehicle.
“The car just rammed into this rail, and the rail went through the car. Apparently, the driver is okay, slightly miraculously,” an eyewitness said.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.
