Local airline Skyward Express has announced the suspension of flights to the Kakamega Airstrip effective September 30, 2024, due to poor conditions of the runway.
In a statement, the airline stated that the flights are suspended temporarily and affected customers will be assisted with alternative arrangements.
“We regret to inform you that effective September 30, 2024, we are temporarily suspending all flight operations to and from Kakamega. This decision is due to the deteriorating condition of the runway at the Kakamega Airstrip, which no longer meets our safety standards,” the statement read in part.
Skyward Express apologized for the inconveniences caused, and expressed hopes that the runway would be fixed sooner.
“Our Customer Service team will be reaching out to all passengers with bookings on the affected flights to assist with alternative arrangements,” the management said.
Government Launches Flights to Kakamega
On December 9, 2022, President William Ruto commissioned the Kakamega Airstrip after its rehabilitation that cost Ksh 174.7 million. A week later, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua launched the first commercial flight from Nairobi to Kakamega.
Gachagua saw off the inaugural flight by Skyward Express to Kakamega town at Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

Speaking during the launch, Gachagua praised the growing partnership with the private sector, including airline operators.
Gachagua noted that leaders from the western region had been asking for the flights to the town for a longtime and that it had taken only a week for the government to actualize it.
“This new policy of continuous engagement is what is going to make things move in this country. The leaders of Western Kenya have been asking for this for many years but were not given an ear,” the DP said during the launch.
