21-Year-old Evans Kiratu has succumbed to injuries sustained during the Finance Bill 2024 protest in Nairobi CBD.
According to preliminary reports, Kiratu was hit by a teargas canister on his loins during the protest on Thursday, June 20.
Chris Munene, a well-wisher, struggled to get him to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment but the process was delayed because of the crowd within the city center.
He was admitted with severe injuries and treatment commenced immediately. However, he passed away on Friday. June 21.

Details of the Incident
According to Munene, well-wishers made several attempts to stop vehicles passing through the area to help Kiratu but many motorists were scared of violent protestors.
Eventually, Eduhmaks, a user on X who was helping save Kiratu’s life, a lady stopped and helped them rush the victim to hospital.
“After numerous attempts to stop The St John’s Ambulance van but they refused. I won’t blame them maybe they thought we’re being violent.
“We we’re forced to stop a certain lady in a small car, and she agreed to take the boy to hospital together with Chris,” he said.
Activist Hanifa Farsafi confirmed the demise of the protestor, noting that his body lay at the KNH morgue.

Protestor Rex Masai Dies
The news of his demise came hours after another protestor, 29-year-old Rex Kanyike Masai, died of a gunshot wound sustained during the protest.
According to Rex’s mother, her son was on his way from work when he was caught in the melee in town.
She said that she received the news of the shooting at around 7 PM from a friend, who was participating in the protest with her son.
“I received a phone call at around 7PM yesterday and was informed that my son had been shot on his left leg. He was rushed to Bliss hospital in the CBD by his friends. But by the time I got to town, he was gone.
“The friend told me that they were on their way to town from work and because they were in the protest, they were worried that they would lose each other in the crowd,” she narrated.
