Azimio coalition leaning Members of Nairobi County Assembly on Thursday skipped the inauguration ceremony of Governor Johnson Sakaja despite having been invited.
The MCAs said they deliberately avoided the occasion after learning that President-elect William Ruto would be in attendance.
Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok said that from the invitations they received they were not told Ruto will be present
However, Imwatok clarified that they don’t have any issue with Sakaja since their candidate Polycarp Igathe conceded defeat.
“We have no problem with the governor but as it currently stands in the presidency, we can’t share a podium with Ruto,” Imwatok said.
The Azimio MCAs maintained that their current president-elect remains Azimio Presidential candidate Raila Odinga until the matter is settled in court.
Ruto graced the swearing in ceremony of Sakaja and his deputy which happened at the KICC Nairobi
Outgoing Nairobi governor Anne Kananu and Nairobi Metropolitan Service(NMS) Director Mohamed Badi also attended the inauguration ceremony
Sakaja was elected on a United Democratic Alliance(UDA) ticket under the Kenya Kwanza coalition after defeating his closest challenger Polycarp Igathe who vied on a jubilee party ticket.
Sakaja is however confronted with a county assembly whose majority members are from the Azimio coalition.
