Beatrice Chebet, Kipyegon & Wanyonyi Take Millions Home as Ruto Awards Olympic Medalists

President William Ruto has awarded Kenyan athletes who won medals in the Paris Olympics with bank cheques among them Beatrice Chebet, Faith Kipyegon and Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

The awards were presented on August 15 during a breakfast meeting in Eldoret.

Gold medalists received Ksh3 million, silver medalists Ksh2 million, and bronze medalists Ksh1 million.

Kenya received a total of 11 medals in the Paris Olympics with Kenya becoming position one in Africa and 17 in the world in the Olympics.

Chebet was awarded Ksh 6 million after she won the first gold medal on August 5 in the 5000m race at the Stade de France. She finished with a winning time of 14:28.56, edging out her compatriot, Faith Kipyegon.

Beatrice Chebet once again raced to victory in the women’s 10,000m at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Friday, August 9, claiming her second gold of the Games.

Chebet, Kipyegon and Wanyonyi Bags Gold Medals

Chebet finished ahead of Italy’s Nadia Battocletti and Dutch star Sifan Hassan, who won silver and bronze, respectively.

The world record holder crossed the finish line with a time of 30:43.25 to claim her place on the top of the podium, securing the Olympic title in front of a roaring crowd at the Stade de France.

Faith Kipyegon who made history by winning the 1500 meters final, becoming the first athlete ever to secure three consecutive Olympic gold medals in this event.

She received Ksh 5 million for bagging a gold and a silver medal in the Olympics.

Kipyegon set a new Olympic record with a time of 3:51.29, outpacing competitors including Australia’s Jessica Hull and the UK’s Georgia Bell, who took silver and bronze, respectively.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi gold medalist in the Paris 2024 men’s 800m at the Stade de France on Saturday, August 10 received Ksh. 3 million.

He finished in 1:41.19, the third-fastest time ever, just 0.2 seconds shy of Kenyan legend David Rudisha’s world record of 1:40.91 set at the London 2012 Olympics.

Silver Medalists

In addition to her gold, Faith Kipyegon also won a silver medal in the 5000m race.

Kipyegon, who initially finished second with a time of 14:29.60, faced disqualification for obstruction.

However, following a successful appeal by Kenya to World Athletics, Kipyegon was reinstated to her second-place position.

Ronald Kwemoi secured second place in the 5,000m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, earning a silver medal for Kenya.

Kwemoi clocked a time of 13:54.06, finishing second behind Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who claimed gold with a time of 13:13.66. Kwemoi was awarded Ksh 2 million for his silver medal achievement.

Athletes who won Bronze Medals

Benson Kipruto had a commendable performance in the men’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing a bronze medal on August 10, 2024.

Kipruto who completed the challenging course with a time of 2:07:00 was awarded Ksh 1million.

Meanwhile, Abraham Kibiwot delivered a strong performance in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing a bronze medal on August 7 with a time of 8:06.47.

Mary Moraa also secured a bronze medal in the women’s 800 meters event at the Paris Olympics on August 5, 2024.

Moraa, the reigning 800m world champion, clocked a time of 1:57.42 to finish third on the podium, securing a bronze medal.

Hellen Obiri secured a bronze medal in the women’s marathon on August 11, 2024, finishing the race with a time of 2:23:10.

Faith Cherotich delivered a strong performance in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing a bronze medal on August 6, 2024.

She finished with a personal best time of 8:55.15. All these bronze medalists at the 2024 Paris Olympics have been awarded Ksh 1 million each by President Ruto.
