Police have recovered a body believed to be that of Jane Atila, a second-year University of Nairobi student who went missing earlier this month.

The body was discovered on October 17  in a forested area near Kikuyu, Kiambu County, following a tip-off from local residents, before being taken to City Mortuary.

Jane Atila’s Disappearance

Jane, 20, was last seen on October 3 after leaving her campus residence to visit her boyfriend.

According to police sources, Jane’s phone was switched off shortly after she left the university premises, and her family later received suspicious ransom calls, some of which were determined to be hoaxes.

The police added that the body, which was found in a shallow grave, showed signs of decomposition, suggesting it had been there for several days.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased, pending DNA test results.

However, personal items found near the scene have led investigators to believe it may be Jane.

Prime Suspect Arrested

Kiambu County Police Commander Samson Murithi confirmed that a suspect is in custody in connection with the disappearance.

“We have a male suspect who was arrested last week. He is assisting us with investigations. We are treating this as a possible homicide.”

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is believed to have had a close relationship with the victim.

Police are investigating whether he was the last person to see Jane alive.

Sources close to the investigation say the suspect was traced through mobile phone records and surveillance footage from Kikuyu town.

Jane’s family, devastated by the news, is awaiting official confirmation from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

“We are praying for strength. We just want closure,” said her mother, Beatrice Atila, outside City Mortuary where the body was taken for forensic examination.

Students at the University of Nairobi held a candlelight vigil on campus over the weekend, demanding justice and improved safety measures.

Neighbors, who declined to publicly give their statements, say Jane was last seen at her boyfriend’s house, where the two allegedly had a serious argument before she vanished.

The boyfriend has since moved out and switched off his phones, deepening the mystery over their whereabouts.

Missing University Students Cases

The case has reignited concerns over the safety of university students, especially young women, in urban and semi-urban areas.

Jane was pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi.

Described by her lecturers as a bright and ambitious student, she had dreams of working in conservation and community development.

Activists are calling for better coordination between universities and law enforcement agencies to more efficiently track missing students.

Lawmakers are also urging the Ministry of Education to collaborate with security agencies to develop a national framework for handling student disappearances.

DCI officers are expected to release preliminary forensic findings later this week.

Meanwhile, police have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information on social media, warning that it could jeopardize the investigation.

This incident marks the third case of a missing university student reported in Nairobi in the past two months.

While the other cases were resolved with the students found alive, Jane’s case has taken a tragic turn that has shocked the academic community and the nation at large.

The University of Nairobi administration has pledged to support the family and work with authorities to ensure justice is served.

The DCI has indicated that more arrests could follow, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
