Activist Boniface Mwangi has announced another march to Parliament, set for July 25, 2024, to commemorate the fallen heroes from the previous “Occupy Parliament” protests.

The march, dubbed “Mashujaa Wetu March,” comes a month after the demonstrations that saw many Kenyan youth breach Parliament grounds in protest against the contentious Finance Bill 2024.

In his statement on X, Mwangi expressed his disappointment over the loss of more lives during the recent country wide protests.

“On 25th July 2024, to mark one month since 25th June 2024, family members of the fallen heroes, and Kenyans of goodwill, will proceed to Parliament to lay flowers and demand justice for their loved ones,” he said.

He faulted President William Ruto for failing to keep his compensation promise to families of the protest victims, who he says died at the hands of police while peacefully demonstrating.

Justice for the “Occupy Parliament” Protest Victims

“President Ruto promised to compensate the heroes killed by police in the peaceful protests. Today, they killed more. When will the killings stop?”

Mwangi stressed that no dialogue or new cabinet appointments should occur until justice is served.

He also urged the police not to prevent the families of the fallen protestors from accessing the Parliament grounds to lay flowers in memory of their loved ones.

“No dialogue or new cabinet before justice. We hope the police will not stop the families from accessing the scene of crime to lay flowers in memory of their fallen kin,” said Mwangi.

Mwangi Reflects on the Events of “Occupy Parliament” Protests

Mwangi believes that the events of June 25th, 2024, when the young people of Kenya stood up against bad leadership, corruption, and tribalism, have forever changed the country.

“Kenya will never be the same again because of what happened on 25th June. When the young people of Kenya said an emphatic No! to bad leadership, corruption, tribalism, and everything else that bedevils our country.”

“The heroes who occupied parliament changed Kenya forever, and on Thursday we shall lay flowers at parliament buildings in their memory.”

He expressed his hope that June 25th will eventually be recognized as a national holiday to commemorate the brave youth who occupied Parliament and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mwangi assured that their names and sacrifices will never be forgotten.

“In our lifetime we shall ensure June 25th becomes a national holiday in remembrance of those brave, young people. Their sacrifice, and names will never be forgotten. #OccupyParliament #MashujaaWetu”.

ODPP Gives Update on Probe into Rex Masai’s Death

Meanwhile, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Tuesday gave an update on the ongoing investigations into the death of Rex Masai, a protestor who was shot during the anti-finance bill protests.

In a statement dated July 23, the ODPP said it received four files and accompanying reports from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) related to deaths and injuries during the protests witnessed across various parts of the country including that of Rex.

ODPP said the investigations show that Rex’s relatives positively identified his body for postmortem.

However, the ODPP explained that the CCTV footage believed to have captured the shooting incident does not clearly show the alleged police officer who shot Rex Masai.

“The CCTV footage showing the shooting does not clearly identify the person who pulled the trigger,” said the ODPP.

It was also revealed that the people who were with Rex at the time of the incident were yet to record a statement on the same with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) which is probing the incident.

“I call upon any person with information pertaining to this case especially the witnesses who took the deceased to hospital and those who witnessed the shooting to come and record a statement with IPOA,” said the DPP.
