The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has licensed an additional 25 Digital Credit Providers (DCPs), raising the total number of licensed mobile loan companies in the country to 252.
In a notice on July 14, CBK stated that the new approvals were confirmed on Tuesday under Section 59(2) of the Central Bank of Kenya Act, and the latest licensing follows the approval of 32 digital lenders in April and is part of its efforts to regulate Kenya’s fast-growing digital lending sector while strengthening consumer protection.
“The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) announces the licensing of an additional 25 Digital Credit Providers (DCPs). This is pursuant to Section 59(2) of the Central Bank of Kenya Act (CBK Act). This brings the number of licensed DCPs to 252 following the licensing of 32 DCPs announced in April 2026,” stated CBK.
More Than 800 Applications Reviewed Under Digital Lending Reforms
CBK said it has received more than 800 applications since March 2022 and has been working closely with applicants to review their business models, governance structures, and consumer protection measures before issuing licenses.

According to the regulator, digital credit providers mainly offer loans through digital channels, including mobile applications and USSD codes. Their products include education loans, development loans, short-term personal loans, asset financing, and business loans.
As of May, licensed digital lenders had issued 8,374,102 loans worth KSh150.56 billion.
CBK noted that other applicants remain at different stages of the licensing process, with many awaiting the submission of required documents. The regulator urged them to submit the outstanding documentation promptly to facilitate completion of the review process.
The central bank also encouraged members of the public to report unregulated digital lenders, saying the licensing framework was introduced following complaints about predatory lending practices, high borrowing costs, unethical debt collection methods, and misuse of borrowers’ personal information
