Chavakali High School is a top-performing national boys’ secondary school in Kenya located in Vihiga County.
Established in 1959, the school began humbly with an inaugural class of just thirty-six male students in a simple one-room block comprising four rooms, built from locally fired brick and covered by a sheet iron roof.
Chavakali offered students from Maragoliland the promise of education, which would grant them a chance at employment in towns rather than a future solely tied to the land.
At its founding, Chavakali’s administrators — including local Nyanza District officials and American Friends (Quaker) Africa Mission (FAM) missionaries — envisioned the school as a center for promoting agricultural education.
They aimed to train young Kenyans to appreciate the importance of agriculture for Kenya’s economic development and to encourage them to remain in the countryside as skilled farm managers and laborers.

This curriculum emphasised practical, vocational training over purely academic subjects, reflecting colonial and postcolonial government strategies to stabilize rural areas through agrarian development.
However, the students and local community members quickly recognized the contradictions in this model, particularly given the scarcity of land.
Many students, understanding the limitations of relying on small, fragmented plots, used their education to secure positions in the wage labor sector rather than returning to farming.

The school has, in the years since, evolved far beyond its initial agrarian focus.
Chavakali High School has grown into one of Kenya’s respected academic institutions, known for its strong academic performance and for shaping generations of professionals who have excelled in various sectors.
As a provincial school, it was later upgraded to national status. Since 2007, it has consistently maintained top performances in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), solidifying its place among the country’s academic giants.
Each year, over 400 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Performance
Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
However, this was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 548 candidates, with more than 88% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

3 students scored a straight A, while 41 scored an A-. Additionally, 77 students attained a B+, 116 scored a B, while 121 managed a B-.
124 students scored a C+, 52 scored grade C, 11 scored a C- and the lowest grade recorded was a D+, obtained by just two students.
The school’s impressive performance continued in 2024, with candidates achieving a mean score of 8.2486 — a slight improvement from the 8.18 recorded in the 2023 KCSE.
School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Chavakali High School was placed in Cluster Four (IV), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
