Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli hosted a party to celebrate his son Prof Lukoye Atwoli for his recent achievements.

Taking to his X account, Atwoli shared photos of the glamorous event showing guests seated in a well-arranged tent decorated with colors purple and white, the theme colors of COTU.

His son Lukoye, dressed in an African print inspired shirt, was all smiles during the party, perhaps an indication of the joy the special honor by his father had brought him.

The party was attended by influential scholars, among other guests, who the COTU Secretary General noted had played an integral part in shaping his son’s destiny.

In his statement, Atwoli said the party was his way of appreciating his son’s achievement in the recent past.

“Today, I hosted a celebration to appreciate and honor the many achievements that my son, Prof. Lukoye Atwoli,”

“Lukoye Atwoli, has achieved over a very short time and at his youthful age. Also present in the celebrations were Dr. Frank Njenga, Prof. Henry Alube and the many who have mentored and walked with Prof. Lukoye over the years. To my son, Prof. Lukoye, I am so proud of you,” Atwoli noted.

Decorated Career and Profile of Lukoye Atwoli

Prof Lukoye Atwoli, despite his relatively young age, has established himself as an accomplished scholar and a prominent specialist in health matters.

His academic credentials speak for themselves, having graduated with top degrees from reputable institutions.

Between 1995 and 2001, the young Atwoli attended Moi University in Eldoret where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in medicine.

During his time at the university, Lukoye also grew his influence, taking part in activities including students’ union leadership and several clubs and societies.

He would later proceed to the University of Nairobi for his postgraduate studies, and eventually graduated with a master’s in medicine (MMed) in 2006.

Later between 2012 and 2015, the now big name in the health sector attended the University of Cape Town where he earned a PhD in Psychiatry.

Positions Lukoye has Held

With his rich CV, Lukoye Atwoli has held several positions in his practice, including as the Board Chair of the Mathari Teaching and Referral Hospital.

He was first appointed to the hospital in 2020 when then President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him as the non-executive board member of the Mathari Hospital.

Three years later in November 2023, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha reinstated him to the position to serve for another three years.

In addition, Lukoye has worked as the Deputy Director of the Aga Khan University Brain and Mind Institute and has taken up roles as a Professor of Psychiatry in institutions including the Aga Khan University and Moi University.

Besides his practice and roles in Kenya, Prof Lukoye is also renowned as a mental health advocate across the world and has been involved in multiple mental health-related research.

He prides himself as a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) World Mental Health Surveys Consortium, which is the leading collaborative project in psychiatric epidemiology globally.

The young Atwoli was also the Global Technical Director for the cities RISE initiative (www.cities-rise.org), whose goal is to help make five cities mental health friendly (Nairobi, Chennai, Bogota, as well as Seattle and Sacramento).
