Justice David Majanja Profile: Educational Background, Career, Family, Wealth and Death

Justice David Majanja was a Kenyan High Court Judge who died on Wednesday June 11, 2024 while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi Hospital. He handled high profile court cases including the petition challenging the controversial Housing Levy. Is his verdict, Justice David Majanja declared the levy unconstitutional. 

President William Ruto, his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka among other top leaders have since mourned him while highlighting the gap left in the Judiciary.

Ruto hailed Majanja for his ability to inspire his colleagues and his powerful intellect to make trusted decisions in the judiciary.

“It has been evident for long that although fairly experienced, Majanja was at the beginning of a long and illustrious career, and this fact makes his passing all the more tragic,” Ruto said.

David Majanja pursued his Bachelor of Law (LLB) at the University of Nairobi and graduated in 1996. He later joined the Kenya Law School where he earned his post graduate diploma and in Law.

David Majanja ‘s Background

He would later join the University of Pretoria in 2005 where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in international trade and investment law in Africa.

Majanja’s academic accomplishments saw his admission to the bar in 1998 and laid a firm foundation for his legal career.

His career set of as he worked in various law firms such as Mohammed and Muigai Advocates, Onyango and Ohaga advocates.

In 2007, David Majanja founded his law firm, Majanja Luseno and Company advocates specializing in Civil and Commercial law.

Majanja , was later appointed as a judge of the High Court in 2011 where he served until his demise on 10th, July,2024. His appointment mirrored his prowess in law which saw him taking up leadership roles.

Additionally, he served as the Vice-chairperson in the Judiciary Committee on Elections (JCE) tasked with solving disputes during the judiciary elections.

Majanja also served as a member of the Judicial Service Commission, after his election to represent the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) on JSC.

In his tenure at JSC, Majanja served as the chair of administration of justice committee in the Judicial Service Commision (JSC).

His leadership in the above positions saw him handle high profile cases among them being the case to petition the implementation of the Finance Act, 2023.

Career Life

In January same year 2023, Justice Majanja was also part of a three-judge bench of the High Court that determined the Housing Levy case.

The three-judge bench comprised Justices Majanja, Christine Meoli and Lawrence Mugambi., where it declared the housing levy unconstitutional.

He was also an assisting Counsel for the Commission of Inquiry into the Post Election Violence popularly known as the Waki Commission.

Justice Majanja was born on May 13,1966 and went on to a modest background to becoming a prominent figure in Kenya’s judicial system.

He was married to Margaret Majanja.
