As part of its operation to flush out hyenas in Juja, Kiambu County, and end attacks, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has published fresh safety precautions.
KWS has been in search of the wild scavengers after several reports of attacks and deaths and an increased human-hyena conflict.
Under the operation of Ondoa Fisi, the service has also deployed a specialized ranger unit across key areas like Juja Farm, Thika West, Ruiru, and Athi River.
However, KWS has maintained that locals have to take individual responsibility to protect themselves from attacks.
“We remain steadfast in ensuring the safety and well-being of Kenyans and urges anyone who spots problematic wildlife to immediately report the sighting through the KWS 24/7 hotline on 0800 597 000,” stated KWS.

How to Stay Safe from Hyena Attacks
The wildlife Authority has urged Kenyans to stay vigilant and prioritize their safety, especially if they encounter hyenas within their communities.
One of the ways KWS has indicated locals can protect themselves is to stay still instead of running during a confrontation with a wild animal.
“When confronted by a hyena, do not give it your back and do not run away. Remember running away encourages the hyena to chase and attack you,” it stated.
Furthermore, the service has asked that locals watch out when they leave their homes, explaining that hyenas mostly scavenge or hunt by night.
“Beware of hyena at night, late evening and early mornings.”
Another tip is to cover waste disposal areas or burn garbage to avoid attracting hyenas from scavenging near human settlements.

Additional Tips
In addition, when walking in Hyena areas, arm yourself with a stick and or stones.
Also, KWS has advised locals to avoid movements of children late in the evening, at night, and early morning. Otherwise, they should always be escorted by adults.
“If you are in a group, stay together- do not scatter. Use any weapon at your disposal to attack the hyena that’s attacking you. Avoid sleeping in the open as you can be an easy target for hyenas.
“Hyenas do not climb trees. If there is a tree/wall nearby climb it and stay there until help comes,” added the statement.
