The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to provide findings from investigations regarding the death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang.
In a statement dated Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the ODPP indicated that it is closely following the circumstances surrounding Mr. Albert Ojwang’s death.
“In light of the foregoing and pursuant to Article 157(4) of the Constitution, and Section 5 (2) of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, Cap. 6B of the Laws of Kenya, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed the IPOA to expedite the said investigations.
The resultant investigation file should be submitted to the DPP within seven (7) days for review and appropriate action,” stated the ODPP.
Additionally, the ODPP assured the public of its commitment to pursuing justice for Ojwang’s death, emphasizing that it will execute its constitutional mandate according to the law, the public interest, and the administration of justice.
IPOA Issued with 7 Day Ultimatum to Investigate Death of Albert Ojwang
The ODPP issued a statement hours after government pathologist Benard Midia released an autopsy revealing the cause of Albert Ojwang’s demise.
According to a postmortem conducted by pathologists on June 10, 2025, Ojwang, who died in police custody, sustained injuries that were not self-inflicted, contradicting initial police claims that he died after hitting his head against a cell wall.

The autopsy indicated that Ojwang’s death was due to severe head injuries, neck compression, and multiple soft tissue traumas across his body, including the upper limbs, trunk, and head.
Dr. Midia noted that the injuries were consistent with a physical struggle and assault, with signs of defensive marks suggesting Ojwang had attempted to protect himself. The report ruled out suicide, stating that the pattern of injuries on the social media influencer’s body was inconsistent with self-inflicted harm.
The death of Albert Ojwang has sparked public discourse, with many ordinary citizens and leaders calling for a thorough investigation into his death and an overhaul of security leadership, urging the President to take action.
Leaders Call for DIG Lagat Resignation
Former Chief Justice David Maraga criticized President William Ruto’s administration for allowing extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances during his tenure, further calling for his resignation.
“It is abundantly clear that this regime will not and cannot govern. We now demand the regime shuts down, makes way for a reset to the rule of law and accountability; a restoration to the values respecting human life; and a rebuilding of our nation’s institutions that now point towards State failure,” Maraga stated.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga condemned the lack of transparency regarding Ojwang’s arrest and transfer to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, located 350km away from Homa Bay, demanding accountability from those who ordered the operation.

Odinga warned that such incidents undermine public trust in the police and state, risking “chaos and collapse” and a “national failure” when citizens cannot distinguish between police and mob injustice.
