Dr Andrew Mulwa first hit the headlines when he was appointed of Andrew as the new Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA).
He was appointed by the former Cabinet Secretary of Health, Nakhumicha S. Wafula. A time when The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency was undergoing a corruption probe at the time.
He again hit the headlines when he became a witness during Rigathi Gachagua’s Impeachment. He swore an affidavit, arguing that the Deputy President allegedly influenced the award of the Ksh3.7 billion malaria nets tender.

Dr Andrew Mulwa’s appointment came after the suspension of former CEO Terry Ramadhani, who faced allegations of corruption in the management of a multi-billion malaria program funded by the Global Fund.
Early Life and Education Background
Dr. Andrew Mulwa did not have an easy early childhood. It was full of obstacles and struggles. He was almost buried alive when his family thought he was dead in 1991 when he fell ill when he was young.
He did his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in Makueni Secondary School in 2000.
Though he sat for his final exams, his results got cancelled, making him get a “Y”. He was told that the reason why his exam was cancelled was because he had shown other students chemistry practical.
He denies the claims to date. He says he cannot remember doing that during the exam.
However, he went back to school and did his exams again and got all “A’s” making him break all the odds that were against him.
Additionally, he was granted a scholarship to go to Japan to study Medicine.
However, his father discouraged him and advised him to follow his passion of one day becoming a doctor.
He later joined the University of Nairobi where he did his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), in Medicine from 2003-2008.
Additionally, he has a master’s degree of science in strategic Management from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
He has also completed specialized programs such as the Executive International Health Systems Program at Harvard University, focusing on global health.
Furthermore, an executive course in Managing Markets for Health from the University of Edinburgh.
His Education Background has enabled him to grow in the medical field allowing him to become an accomplished public health practitioner.
Career Background of Dr. Andrew Mulwa.
Dr Andrew Mulwa started his career as an intern doctor at Machakos Level 5 Hospital where he continued to build on his expertise and later as a medical officer between 2009-2010.
He was later posted to Mbooni District Hospital as a medical officer but later he became the Medical Superintendent between 2010-2013.
He was appointed by the County Government of Makueni as the County Executive of Health Services by the then Governor Kivutha Kibwana.
In 2021, after his exit as the County Executive, Health Services in Makueni County, he became the Director, Medical Services, Preventive and Promotive Health where he serves presently.
In 2023, Former Cabinet Secretary of Health, Nakhumicha S. Wafula, announced the appointment of Andrew Mutava Mulwa as the new Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA).
After her appointment, she said, “The choice of Dr Andrew Mulwa as the acting Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) Chief Executive Officer is based on his skills and expertise in putting together working systems and managing them.”

One of his greatest achievements is that he was part of the Makueni Universal Healthcare Program. This was sparked after he witnessed a woman who needed to undergo Cesarean die on her way to the hospital. This contribution immensely changed health services in Makueni.
He is known as one of the top doctors in Kenya.
