Elijah Wachira has had a tremendous journey from a business consultant to a leading figure in Kenya’s insurance sector. He is well known for his exemplary skills in strategy and management. Additionally, he has contributed greatly to the insurance sectors both in private and public institutions.
Moreover, throughout his career, Wachira committed to improving healthcare financing and insurance services in Kenya.
However, his current role as the SHA Chief Executive Officer met an abrupt end on November 12, 2024, after being served a 90-day compulsory leave to allow for a scrutiny of his professional conduct.
Wachira’s Early Life and Educational Background
Elijah hails from Kiambu County where he was born. Growing up in an environment that cherished hard work, Elijah developed an early interest in business education and business.
Notably, he holds a bachelor’s degree in arts from Egerton University and later pursued a Master of Business Administration in Strategy and Marketing from the University of Nairobi.
In addition, he has also immersed himself in the study of professional affiliations thus manifesting his interest in the insurance sector. At the same time, he is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute in London and the Marketing Society of Kenya (MSK).

Elijah Wachira Suspension
On November 12, 2024, Wachira’s tenure serving as CEO of SHA ended abruptly after the SHA board of management sent him for a mandatory leave of 90 days. The suspension was prompted by the need to investigate his professional conduct and performance as CEO.
On the other hand, the suspensions were also triggered by several concerns over delayed payments to healthcare providers as well as governance issues.
With his suspension, Robert Ingasira, SHA’s Director of Financial Services, was appointed as acting CEO in Wachira’s place.
Wachira’s Net Worth
Wachira’s net worth is approximately Ksh 52 million. As a seasoned insurer, he previously worked for CIC General Insurance, as managing director from 2015-2019. Similarly, Wachira worked as a general Manager for AAR Health Services for three years before joining Madison in November 2010 in a similar role. Later, in his current role he served as NHIF CEO as it was transitioning to SHA before his suspension. He is believed to have accrued the sid net worth throughout his career advancements.
