Tech company Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, is stepping in to support rescue efforts in flash floods in central Texas by providing free internet.
The floods affected central Texas on July 5 claiming at least 50 lives and leaving dozens missing.
The satellite internet provider announced it is distributing Starlink Mini kits to search and rescue teams working in remote and heavily damaged areas.
These portable devices will provide stable internet access in dead zones, where traditional networks have failed due to infrastructure damage.
“In support of those impacted by flooding in Texas, Starlink is providing Mini kits for search and rescue efforts, ensuring connectivity even in dead zones and one month of free service for thousands of customers in the region, including those who paused service so they can reactivate Starlink during this time,” the company said in a statement.
Texas Flash Floods
The announcement comes as rescuers scour the ravaged landscape in Kerr County and surrounding areas.
Helicopters, boats, and drones are being used to locate survivors amid wreckage that includes overturned vehicles, downed trees, and debris-clogged waterways.

Authorities are especially concerned about 27 girls still missing from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp that was overwhelmed by a wall of water earlier this week.
So far, at least 43 people have died in Kerr County alone, including 15 children. Another eight deaths have been confirmed in neighboring counties.
Officials fear the toll may rise as search efforts continue.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott expanded a state disaster declaration Saturday to include Travis County, which lies roughly 130 miles northeast of the hardest-hit areas.
With roads washed out and communication lines cut in some places, emergency crews have faced mounting challenges.
Starlink Aid
Starlink’s technology could offer a critical lifeline, helping teams coordinate evacuations, reunite families, and deliver aid faster.
The company has previously deployed similar solutions during disasters in Ukraine, Hawai,i and other crisis zones.

For many in the affected region, especially rural customers who had paused their Starlink subscriptions, the free reactivation is a welcome relief.
It could help thousands regain access to emergency updates, connect with loved ones, and begin the long road to recovery.
Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, that provides high-speed, low-latency broadband by connecting users directly to a constellation of thousands of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.
Unlike traditional satellite internet, which relies on a few high-altitude satellites, Starlink’s LEO network significantly reduces latency and improves connection stability.
Users install a dish terminal commonly called a “Starlink Kit” that automatically aligns with passing satellites, providing internet even in remote or disaster-affected areas where ground-based infrastructure is unavailable or damaged.
As of mid-2025, Starlink is available in over 70 countries across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
