A criminal group posing as government officials from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), and claiming to be verifying national IDs ahead of the 2027 national elections, has been robbing Kenyans at their homes.
According to KNBS, the agents are visiting homes, carrying fake identification badges and official-looking documents to gain the trust of unsuspecting residents.
The Tuesday, June 10, notice added that some of the identification cards had the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) logo
A viral warning circulating online shows an ID card labelled “Kenya National Bureau of Statistics” with a bold FAKE stamp across it, urging Kenyans to remain alert.
Furthermore, Kenyans have been urged to verify the identity of any person requesting personal information at their doorstep and to report suspicious activity to authorities immediately.

Why are KNBS Agents Doing Door-to-Door Visits?
While there are fake agents visiting people’s homes, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in partnership with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Kenya, and other key institutions, is legitimately undertaking the 2025 Remittances Household Survey (RHS).
The survey is a national exercise aimed at understanding the flow and impact of remittances on Kenyan households.
According to KNBS, the 2025 RHS exercise began on June 3, 2025 and will run for 30 days.
It is an important baseline survey designed to collect qualitative and quantitative data on money and gifts sent by Kenyans living abroad (remittance inflows), as well as those sent by Kenyans living in Kenya to friends or relatives overseas (remittance outflows).

How Will the Data be Used?
In addition, the survey will gather information from households that receive support from international organisations such as FAO, WFP, UNICEF, and UNHCR.
The data collected will be used to shape Kenya’s economic policies, especially considering that diaspora remittances are a cornerstone of the country’s development strategy as outlined in Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). The goal is to grow annual remittances to Ksh1 trillion by 2027.
To begin the survey process, officials are conducting a household listing exercise, which involves randomly selecting households in villages or sub-regions.
Also, all interviews are conducted face-to-face by trained survey personnel, and the process is strictly for statistical purposes.
The KNBS has assured the public that all information collected will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and used to support national planning and development goals.
Additionally, the findings will inform programs geared towards financial literacy and inclusion, especially among remittance-recipient families
Moreover, the bureau has advised Kenyans to cooperate with legitimate KNBS enumerators while remaining alert to potential scams.
