France has deployed military assets, including advanced fighter jets and defensive systems, to strategic locations in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean as the regional conflict intensifies, President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday, March 3.
The developments come as the United States escalated pressure on Spain, threatening to sever economic ties after Madrid refused to allow American forces to use Spanish bases for operations linked to strikes on Iran.
French authorities confirmed that Rafale fighter jets, alongside anti‑air systems and radars, were deployed in recent hours to bolster France’s ability to detect and counter missiles and drones. According to Macron’s government, these deployments are aimed at intercepting aerial threats emanating from hostile forces active in the region.
Foreign Minister Jean‑Noel Barrot told French media that multi‑role Rafale jets stationed at bases such as Al Dhafra in the United Arab Emirates have been actively operating to secure French military facilities and the surrounding airspace. Barrot described the jets and their crews as mobilised “to ensure the security of our installations,” following attacks by drones in the area.
This shift in posture reflects major concern among European governments over the broader implications of the U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran that began late last week, which included strikes on key Iranian targets and the killing of the country’s supreme leader. Iran has since launched missile and drone attacks against Western military bases and allied facilities across the Gulf.

French military planners are not only focusing on the Gulf but also expanding defensive cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. Reports indicate France will dispatch anti‑missile and anti‑drone systems to Cyprus after an Iranian‑made unmanned aerial vehicle struck runway infrastructure at RAF Akrotiri, a British sovereign base on the island. Greek and British forces are also reinforcing the region with jets and warships carrying advanced defensive capabilities.
Paris has emphasized that these deployments are defensive in nature and designed to protect French personnel and facilities, rather than to participate directly in offensive operations. Barrot reiterated that any action would be undertaken in coordination with partner nations and in accordance with international law.
President Donald Trump sharply criticized Spain during a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Trump announced that he had instructed U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to “cut off all trade with Spain” after Madrid refused permission for U.S. forces to use Spanish military bases for missions associated with the campaign against Iran.
Trump framed Spain’s refusal as part of a broader pattern of what he described as uncooperative behavior among European allies, citing Madrid’s resistance to U.S. demands that NATO partners raise defense spending above existing levels. Speaking from the Oval Office, he described Spain as “terrible” and said that the United States would sever all dealings with the country unless its position changed.

Spanish officials responded by defending their sovereign decision, reiterating that Spanish bases will not be used for operations beyond existing agreements or those consistent with the United Nations Charter. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez noted that authorizng the use of bases for offensive actions outside established frameworks would violate Spain’s legal and diplomatic commitments.
Madrid stressed that trade and economic relations with the United States are governed by broader agreements with the European Union, complicating any U.S. attempt to impose a unilateral embargo. Spanish leaders indicated readiness to withstand economic pressure and emphasized the strength of existing EU‑U.S. commercial relations.
