Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially resigned from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Gachagua, who has been a prominent figure within the party, made the announcement in a statement released on 12th May. The resignation comes amid growing speculation over his political future.
In his resignation letter from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Rigathi Gachagua, the 2nd Deputy President of Kenya, provided several reasons for his decision to leave the party.
Gachagua expressed disappointment over the party’s failure to uphold its foundational ideals. He claimed that the UDA, which was initially based on promises of unity and prosperity for all Kenyans, had strayed from its original mission.
Reasons Why Gachagua Resigned
“The party has exhausted and wasted a Kenyan moment to take off economically, socially and politically,” Gachagua wrote, highlighting his belief that the party has failed to deliver on its promises.
Additionally, Gachagua criticized the party’s leadership, particularly in relation to the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s direction.
He cited the coalition’s approach as one of “sinusoidal malignancy,” implying inconsistency and harmful political maneuvering.
“While affirming the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto, our Presidential Candidate then (in 2022), said, ‘It is my firm conviction that the unity, stability and prosperity of our country lies not in the greatness of men but in the strength of our institutions,'” he quoted, before stating that this commitment turned out to be “a lie.”

On the other hand, Gachagua argued that the current leadership, which was supposed to prioritize political inclusion and economic empowerment, had failed to do so.
“No nation can be built on a litany of lies,” he concluded, showing his belief that the promises made by the party were not being fulfilled.
Gachagua’s Presidential Bid
This comes shortly after he had announced that he will vie for presidency in the 2027 national elections.
Speaking during a Church Service, Full Gospel Church Magomano, Juja on Sunday, May 11, the former DP said that if his party appoints him to represent them, he will take the challenge.

Further, he said that if he runs against President William Ruto, the head of state will not stand a chance against him.
“I want to assure you, the people of Juja, the next election will be fine. I am there, Kalonzo is there, Martha Karua is there, Eugene Wamalwa, Fred Matiang’i, we are all there.
Additionally, he announced that he will be officially launching his political party to counter any plans the government has.
“This coming week, I will be launching our political party, and we will hold a huge party to mark the day,” he added.
