Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to take the former Mungiki leader to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Gachagua while attending a church service in Nyeri urged Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia to form a team of lawyers that would take Njenga to the international court over criminal activities that happened in the 1990s.
“Kaguchia, you must get a team of lawyers and document the atrocities that were committed by that criminal gang against the people in the 90s because those were crimes against humanity were engaging the International Criminal Court,” he said.
“That the ICC should not wait until crimes against humanity have been committed. This gang is known to have committed crimes against humanity. Now with the sponsorship of government these criminal activities have come back and for sure they have started.”
He added, “I want you to write to ICC to invite them to come to Kenya and make sure the activities of that criminal gang sponsored by government is not allowed to take place.
Why Gachagua Wants to Take Maina Njenga to ICC
Gachagua stated that during the regime of former President Daniel Moi, the government severely damaged the economy and became increasingly intolerant and dictatorial.
He further pointed out that the criminal activities committed by the Mungiki gang in the 1990s, which resulted in the deaths of more than 29 people, are now repeating themselves.
According to Gachagua, when the people of Mt. Kenya began speaking out against bad governance, the Mungiki gang was formed to suppress their voices and punish them.

Additionally, he asserted that the gang descended on the people of this region with brutal efficiency causing chaos and uncertainty.
“They beheaded people, circumcised our women, raped our daughters, defiled our children, extorted money from bus stops, demanded money for dowry, and collected money in shops,” he said.
Gachagua alleged that in 2009, 29 people were killed at Gathaithi, with their necks reportedly chopped off.
He stated that it took the late John Michuki four years to deal with the Mungiki gang.
Claims of Maina Njenga Working with Govt
The ousted DP further claimed that the Maina Njenga has now joined the government and is being used to pressure the people of the region into accepting the president and his deputy.
“Years later, history is repeating itself. The government has mismanaged the economy, and it has become unpopular,” Gachagua asserted.
“People have started saying no and the same gang leader has joined the government and has been brought here to force the people of this region to accept the president and his deputy.”

Gachagua stated that Maina Njenga on December 31, 2024, announced that he had been given a role by the government to travel around the area and pressure the people into accepting President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
Additionally, Njenga was reportedly tasked with escorting leaders who had been rejected by their constituents in the region.
The former Deputy President urged President William Ruto to engage directly with the residents to understand the reasons behind their opposition, rather than relying on the Mungiki leader to enforce peace.
