Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) grilled senior officials in the office of the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over suspicion of financing goons during Gen Z led protests.

The Serious Crimes Unit officers questioned the unnamed three individuals on Tuesday, July 30.

Further, the top officials recorded statements with the directorate over their alleged involvement in protests across the country.

More allies of the deputy president have been summoned for interrogation for either their direct or indirect implication in the case.

More Government Official Summoned

Although there is no formal evidence presented to prove the involvement of the politicians and senior government officials, two lawmakers, more MPs and one former governor are on the radar of the Serious Crimes Unit.

As this unfolds, Embakasi Central Member of Parliament and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) member Mejjadonk (Benjamin Gathiru) has filed a lawsuit against Abuga Makori.

Makori has been sued for publishing a list of individuals he alleged funded goons to disrupt peaceful protests across the country.

In the suit, Makori is accused of publishing the list on his X account on July 2, stating that Gachagua had recruited dangerous goons to fight President William Ruto.

“We act for Honorable Mejjadonk (Benjamin Gathiru) (hereinafter referred to as “our client”) under whose instructions we address you as hereunder.

“That on or about 2nd of July 2024, through your X handle “@abuga_makori” commanding 51900 followers, you posted and/or caused a post to be made and published

“By the 3rd of July 2024 the post had 60 Reposts, and 18,000 views. That on the same day, through your X handle “@abuga makori” you published another post,” the suit read in part.

Moreover, the MP, who was named among the individuals on the list, has accused the online user of defamation.

Others on the list include the deputy president, former governor Mike Sonko, Ferdinand Waititu, Ndura Waruinge, George Theuri, former CJ Willy Mutunga and activist Boniface Mwangi.

Push for Gachagua’s Impeachment

Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has come out in defense of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, dismissing calls for his impeachment as baseless and misguided.

In a fiery statement to the media, Governor Kahiga argued that instead of facing impeachment, the DP should be praised for his role in the rejection of the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

“These accusations are nothing but weak claims. The Deputy President stood up against the Finance Bill, and the people have spoken – they rejected it. Shouldn’t we be applauding him for being the voice of the people?” he questioned.

“These attempts to remove him from office are not only misguided but also a slap in the face of the people who elected him.”‘
