President William Ruto’s strategy to form a broad-based government seem to have stirred up anger among the Kenyan Youth as they now plan for another grand protest dubbed ‘Nane Nane’ march.
As the Gen Z led protests hit the seventh week, youths in Kenya have planned another round of anti-government protests set to happen on 8 August 2024.
The protests which started on 18th, June were instigated by the now withdrawn finance bill 2024 and later started as a rallying call for the resignation of the Ruto administration.
The August 8th march has been dubbed ‘Nane Nane’ drawing inspiration from the monumental ‘Saba saba’ protests of the 1990’s.
Posters have been making rounds across different social media platforms with the schedule of activities to take place leading to the day of the march.
According to the action plan, mobilization happened on different social media platforms including TikTok, WhatsApp and Facebook between July 24th to July 27th, 2024.
‘On Tik Tok netizens were urged to create videos and share the widely, on WhatsApp they were to update their status and share with their contacts and lastly on Facebook, Twitter (X) they were to post and share messages to raise awareness,” reads part of the action plan.

Nane Nane March
Between July 28 and 31 interested protesters are expected to secure their transport including booking Nairobi bound buses or considering car pulling and group travelling.
Likewise, between 1st and 4th August Kenyans will be expected to open their doors their relatives and unlucky traveler’s being expected to secure temporary shelters.
Ultimately, on 5th to 7th August all the final preparations would have been made, with briefings from coordinators on how the march will happen being made.
“On 5th-7th August all transport and accommodation arrangements would have been made, final briefings will be conducted by volunteers and coordinators before the march to the CBD,” read part of the action plan.
In addition, the protesters insists that their march will be peaceful as police brutality linger with previous protests being painted with violence, loots, loss of lives, injuries and gunshots.

Earlier, the July 18 #OccupyUhuruPark protests were aborted after the acting Inspector General of police Douglas Kanja placed a ban that was later lifted by the High court.
Consequently, the July 25 protests dubbed #OccupyJKIA were unsuccessful leading to the arrest of netizens including activist Boniface Mwangi.
Police seized Boniface Mwangi and booked him at the Central police station vide OB no. 91/25/07/2024.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI, investigations into the offences are ongoing with a view of establishing the motive of carrying the assorted items that they were arrested with.
According to the document, his mobile phones have been confiscated to be subjected to cyber forensic for analysis.
