The government has launched the 2025 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment drive, unveiling new guidelines aimed at restoring integrity and fairness in the process.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, speaking the KDF Headquarters in Nairobi on October 13, emphasized the government’s commitment to eliminating fraud, favoritism, and corruption that have long plagued military recruitment.

A New Era of Accountability

In her address, Tuya declared the government’s commitment to a tamper-proof, transparent, and merit-based recruitment system.

“We are flagging off this exercise with a clear message: the Kenya Defence Forces recruitment is free, fair, and open to all eligible Kenyans. Any form of bribery or canvassing will be met with arrest and prosecution.”

Tuya revealed that the Ministry of Defence has received reports of fraudsters posing as KDF generals, complete with fake uniforms and counterfeit documents.

Tuya unveils New Guidelines

Recruitment Is Free

Tuya made it clear that no payment is required at any stage of the recruitment.

She warned that bribery, canvassing, or influence-peddling would lead to immediate arrest and prosecution.

Official Communication Channels

Only recruitment notices published through the following platforms are considered valid:

  • Ministry of Defence website: mod.go.ke
  • KDF’s verified social media accounts
  • National newspapers

Tuya cautioned Kenyans against trusting WhatsApp forwards, Facebook posts, or unofficial posters, which have been used in past scams.

Application Process

The recruitment will follow a hybrid model:

  • Online applications for:
    • General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets
    • Specialist Officers
    • Tradesmen/women
      Apply via: recruit.mod.go.ke
  • Physical recruitment for:
    • General Duty Recruits
    • Defence Forces Constables
      Conducted at gazetted centres countrywide.

Shortlisted candidates for online applications will be published in national newspapers between October 21–24.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with valid national ID cards.

They must present original documents and four copies of their National ID, KRA PIN Certificate and Academic certificates.

Age Limits

Applicants for General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets and General Duty Recruits must be between 18 and 26 years old.

Those applying as Specialist Officers or Tradesmen/women must be 30 years or younger. Chaplains and Imams are eligible up to the age of 39.

For Defence Forces Constables, retired KDF personnel must be aged between 30 and 55 years, while retired NYS personnel must be between 35 and 45 years.

Physical and Medical Standards

CS Soipan Tuya stated that all candidates must meet strict physical requirements.

Male applicants must be at least 1.60 metres tall and weigh no less than 54.55 kilograms, while female applicants must be at least 1.52 metres tall and weigh no less than 50 kilograms.

Additionally, all candidates must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 30. Female applicants must not be pregnant during the recruitment or training period.

Medical fitness assessments will be conducted at designated KDF training institutions to ensure all recruits meet the required health standards.

Academic Qualifications

Applicants for General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets (Regular) must have attained a KCSE mean grade of B (Plain), with at least a C+ in English, Mathematics, and one science subject.

Those applying as GSO Cadets (Graduate) must meet the same KCSE requirements and possess a recognized bachelor’s degree.

 Hotline for Complaints

To report any cases of fraud, bribery, or suspicious activity related to the recruitment process, the Ministry of Defence has provided two official hotlines: 0726 419 706 and 0726 419 709.

Citizens are encouraged to use these numbers to ensure accountability and transparency throughout the exercise.

Disqualification Criteria

Candidates will be disqualified for:

  • Providing false documents
