The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has taken action following the mysterious death of Dr. Susan Kamengere Njoki, a nurse and founder of the Toto Touch organisation, who was confirmed to have been murdered while undergoing treatment at one of the Chiromo Group of Hospitals’ facilities.

The postmortem examination conducted on her body at the Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home in Nairobi on Tuesday, July 22, by six pathologists revealed that Njoki had suffered trauma consistent with manual strangulation.

Addressing the press, government pathologist Dr J. N. Ndung’u said all six pathologists agreed on the findings. The pathologists represented the family, the hospital, the government, and the police.

The team also found other medical signs unrelated to the cause of death, which may have stemmed from a separate condition the deceased had during her hospital admission.

“She died shortly after her last meal; we found food in her stomach. Death likely occurred around four hours after,” Dr Ndung’u noted.

The findings contradicted earlier claims that her death was linked to a psychiatric episode or medical complications.

Following the autopsy report, KMPDC, in a letter dated June 25, 2025, ordered the immediate evacuation of all patients from the Chiromo Group of Hospitals’ Braeside branch within 24 hours.

The Council also instructed the hospital to suspend all clinical services at the branch until further notice, citing patient safety concerns.

“The above captioned subject, our letter referenced Ref: KMPDC/DEC.GEN/2025/21 and the Council inspection of your facility on 18th July refer,” reads part of the letter.

KMPDC stated that the directive follows further reports indicating potential involvement of a hospital staff member in Dr. Njoki’s death.

In addition to shutting down the facility, KMPDC has demanded that Chiromo Group respond promptly to the letter, including the submission of postmortem reports, patient records, and other critical documents relevant to the investigation.

The hospital is also required to submit a detailed report outlining preventive steps to avoid similar incidents in future.

“These directives are issued pursuant to CAP 253 and subsidiary legislation legal notice 171, the Medical Practitioners and Dentists (Inquiry and Disciplinary Proceedings) (Procedure) Rules 2022, Rule 8 to ensure patient safety and restore public confidence in the health system,” said KMPDC.

“The Council remains committed to ensuring patient safety and upholding of the highest standards of care.”

The new orders by KMPDC comes as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intensify their investigation into the mysterious death of the Toto Touch founder.

Investigations

The probe took a new turn on Wednesday, July 23, when detectives launched a manhunt for a female staff member who vanished two days after Njoki’s body was discovered.

Investigators now consider the missing woman a key suspect, following the recovery of CCTV footage believed to have captured Njoki’s final moments before she was allegedly strangled to death.

For over eight hours, detectives based at Kabete Police Station interrogated several hospital staff. These included individuals who had picked Njoki from her residence in Kileleshwa, personnel who attended to her in a shared hospital room, and other employees who were on duty at the facility on the day she died.

Police also spent considerable time analyzing CCTV footage retrieved from the hospital, which specializes in mental health care. The footage documented Njoki’s admission into the facility and provided a timeline of her activities leading up to her death.

As the investigation unfolds, detectives have identified Njoki’s husband, Alloise Ngure, and her attending psychiatrist, Dr. Onyancha, as additional persons of interest. Both were arrested last week, questioned, and later released on police cash bail after recording their statements.

Njoki’s family has since called on authorities to apprehend and prosecute everyone involved in her killing.

Chiromo Hospital Group Founder Speaks on Toto Touch CEO Susan Njoki’s Murder

Earlier this week, Chiromo Hospital Group founder and chairman, Dr. Frank Njenga broke his silence over the murder case while confirming that the hospital is fully cooperating with investigators.

Known to Njoki personally, Dr. Njenga, in a statement on Wednesday, expressed sorrow and remorse over Njoki’s death and termed it as a moment of reckoning for the facility and mental healthcare in the country.

The renowned psychiatrist emphasized that transparency and truth must be prioritised to ensure those culpable are held accountable.

He assured that the hospital is conducting an internal review of its operational and procedural protocols in the wake of the incident.

“Truth is paramount to all other concerns in this case. We care for the vulnerable, and now we must prove it when it’s hardest to do so. First, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and to everyone grieving this loss. A brilliant young woman known to me personally died in our care. That demands more than sorrow. It demands truth,” said Dr. Njenga.

He at the same time said that Chiromo Hospital is actively engaged in self-introspection and review of its operational and procedural mandates.
