The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced the disbursement of monthly stipends and accrued arrears owed to 3,747 medical interns.
In a statement on Saturday, November 30, the MoH confirmed that the payment was made to Nursing Officers’ Interns, Clinical Officer Interns, Medical Officer Interns, and Pharmacist Interns.
“The Ministry of Health is pleased to announce the successful payment of monthly stipends and accrued arrears to nursing officers’ interns, clinical officers’ interns, medical officers interns and pharmacist interns,” read the statement in part.
“This marks a significant milestone in our commitment to supporting healthcare professionals at the foundation of their careers while strengthening Kenya’s healthcare system.”
Ministry of Health Disburses Ksh 960 Million
The ministry stated that a total of Ksh 965,875,345 has been disbursed to the interns which will cover monthly stipends and accrued arrears aimed to benefit 3,741 interns.
Among those receiving the funds are 826 medical officer interns, 274 pharmacists, 71 dentists, 140 clinical officer interns with degrees, and 1,185 nursing officer interns.
Additionally, 1,251 clinical officer interns with diplomas are also included in the disbursement.

The total amount comprises Ksh528,615,125.60 in arrears payments and Ksh110,668,070, in regular payments for nursing and clinical officers interns.
A further payment of Ksh 326,592,150.00 has been made as arrears payments for medical officer interns, dental officers interns and pharmacist interns.
“This 100% payment ensures that all posted interns in the specified cadres receive their dues without delay, demonstrating the Ministry’s dedication to addressing the welfare of healthcare workers,” the Ministry said.
Health CS Speaks on Remuneration
Health CS Dr. Deborah Barasa emphasized that internship programs are a vital part of Kenya’s healthcare system, offering hands-on experience to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Additionally, she noted that by ensuring timely remuneration, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to creating a supportive environment for professional growth, ultimately improving the quality of healthcare provided to Kenyans.
“We extend our gratitude to the interns for their resilience and dedication to service delivery in healthcare facilities across the country,” she said.
“Their contribution remains pivotal in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and advancing Kenya’s health agenda.”

The CS stated that the Ministry of Health remains dedicated to resolving any pending issues and preventing similar challenges in the future.
She further mentioned that this commitment is reflected in ongoing negotiations with healthcare unions to finalize the respective Collective Bargaining Agreements, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and court directives.
All interns were advised to reach out to their respective departments for further clarification or assistance regarding their payments.
