The newly selected prime minister of Haiti Garry Conille was hospitalized on Saturday, June 8 in the capital of Port-au-Prince.
The office of the prime minister in a statement reported that Conille was feeling slightly unwell following a week of intense activities.
“Following a week of intense activities, the Prime Minister, SEM Conille Garry, experienced a slight malaise in the afternoon of Saturday, June 8, 2024, and went to the hospital to receive care,” said the office of the prime minister.
A person close to Prime Minister Conille who spoke to AP anonymously, said Conille developed breathing problems and was rushed to the hospital.
According to AP the informant was with the prime minister when he noticed he was struggling to breathe. He also noted that Conille is asthmatic and sometimes uses an inhaler.
Earlier that day, the prime minister toured Haiti’s main international airport, which recently reopened after gang violence forced it to close for nearly three months.
After his appointment on May 28, Conille met regularly with the transitional council as they debated who should be appointed to Haiti’s new Cabinet.

Garry Conille New Prime Minister
Conille was chosen as prime minister after a convoluted selection process following the resignation of his predecessor Ariel Henry.
He faces an arduous task as Haiti’s newest leader, including quelling widespread gang violence as the country prepares for the UN-backed deployment of the Kenya Police Force.
The move had been partly delayed because Haiti lacked a premier after former Prime Minister Ariel Henry stepped down on April 25th after weeks of mounting pressure and increasing violence in the impoverished country.
Henry was on an official visit to Kenya when gangs launched coordinated attacks on Feb 29 burning police stations, shooting the country’s main international airport and storming Haiti’s two biggest prisons releasing more than 4000 inmates.
The violence left him locked out of the country and eventually led to his resignation.
The Kenya police will lead the security mission to restore political stability and tackle armed gangs who control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

President Ruto Sends Police to Haiti
Further, President William Ruto on May 24 said another team of police officers will arrive in Haiti in about three weeks.
Ruto said his government had already sent the first team, adding that the second team would be deployed only after serious ground assessment and assurance.
“Once we have that assessment that we agreed with the Haitian police and the Haitian leadership, we are looking at the horizon of between three weeks and there about for us to be ready to deploy, once everything on the ground is set,” Ruto stated.
This implies that the latest they can arrive in Haiti is June 15th.
Apart from Kenya, other countries that will send officers to Haiti include Chile, Jamaica, Paraguay, Burundi, Chad, Nigeria and Mauritius.
