The mission was mandated by the African Union and the United Nations Security Council.
ATMIS brought together troops and police officers from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Burundi and Djibouti to support Somalia’s security institutions and help transfer security responsibilities to Somali forces.
The mission’s key objectives included degrading the threat posed by the Al-Shabaab militant group, securing population centers and major supply routes, and strengthening the capacity of the Somali Security Forces.
ATMIS was also tasked with implementing Somalia’s transition plan, which sought to gradually hand over security duties to Somali forces ahead of the mission’s drawdown at the end of 2024.
The deployment exposed participating officers to a complex operating environment marked by counter-terrorism operations, stabilization efforts and coordination among multiple African security agencies.
