As part of the government’s ongoing efforts to deliver universal health coverage (UHC), all Kenyans are now required to contribute to the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The process of making contributions differs depending on your employment status—whether you are formally employed or self-employed.

How Social Health Authority contributions are made

If you’re self-employed, you’ll need to register voluntarily and remit your contributions independently. Payments can be made using mobile money platforms (e.g., M-Pesa), bank transfers, or through authorised payment outlets.

To complete registration and access your payment details, visit the SHA portal or visit physical service points, such as Huduma Centres, SHA service desks, or help desks located in hospitals.

Means Testing for self-employed contributors

For those without a consistent income, SHA uses a Means Testing Instrument (MTI) to determine how much you should contribute. This tool assesses your household and financial situation to calculate a fair premium.

To complete the means testing process:

  1. Visit afyayangu.go.ke and log in.
  2. Go to My Profile.
  3. Under Income, select that you are self-employed.
  4. Complete the questionnaire under Means Testing.
  5. The system will then compute your monthly or annual premium based on your responses.

The tool evaluates several socioeconomic factors, including:

  • Size and characteristics of your household
  • Type and condition of your housing
  • Access to essential services
  • Ownership of assets
  • Educational background
  • Employment details

Once you’ve completed the form, SHA will generate a premium amount for you to contribute—either monthly or annually.

How to Make Your SHA Payment

After your premium amount has been calculated, there are multiple payment options available:

Pay via M-PESA Paybill:

  1. Open the M-Pesa menu.
  2. Select Lipa na M-Pesa.
  3. Tap on Paybill.
  4. Enter 200222 as the Business Number.
  5. For Account Number, enter your National ID number.
  6. Enter the amount you’re required to pay.
  7. Input your M-Pesa PIN to complete the transaction.

Pay via USSD Code:

  1. Dial *147# on your phone.
  2. When prompted, enter your National ID number.
  3. Choose Make Payment from the menu.
  4. Follow the subsequent steps to finish your transaction.

Pay via the SHA online portal:

  1. Go to the Afya Yangu website.
  2. Log in using your ID number and the OTP sent to your device.
  3. Navigate to the Payment section.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to make your payment.

Important reminders

  • Always double-check that your National ID number is entered correctly as the account number to avoid payment issues.
  • After submitting your payment, confirm that it has been processed by checking your SHA account or contacting SHA support.
  • If you experience challenges, consider visiting a local service centre or contacting SHA’s customer support team.

For further details, please visit the official SHA website or contact the nearest service centre for assistance with registration and payments.
