Indian opinion leaders have raised concerns over former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s remarks on the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) takeover by the Adani Group.
The leaders issued statements on their X accounts, disagreeing with the Azimio leader’s remarks.
“This has been the story of India’s foreign policy for the last 10 years—by Adani, for Adani, of Adani,” a senior Congress leader remarked.
On his part, Indian journalist Ravir Nair, a fierce critic of the Adani Group, wrote, “Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga claims Narendra Modi introduced him to Gautam Adani and organized the Kenyan delegation’s visit to Adani Group’s various projects.”
Indian leaders criticize Raila’s remark for Adani deal
The leaders criticized Odinga for a statement he made on Sunday, October 13.
Odinga described Adani as a reputable firm and supported the group’s decision to take over JKIA.
The African Union Chairman candidate defended his decision to support the JKIA Adani deal saying the country needed to upgrade its infrastructure in critical sectors like transport, energy, and Information Communication and Technology (ICT).

“When I was a Prime Minister of Kenya, I was introduced to the company and its activities by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of State of Guja land.
Indeed, Prime Minister Modi organized a Kenyan Government mission to visit Guja land and I had the opportunity to visit this company infrastructure project that included a port, a power plant, a railway line and an airstrip developed out of a swamp donated by the Government of India,” Raila narrated.
Odinga receives backlash home for supporting Adani Group
Back home, Odinga received backlash from a section of Kenyans following his remarks on the JKIA-Adani deal.
Nelson Amemya, the JKIA Adani Whistleblower said that “Raila pulled the same move he pulled during the Finance bill protest on Adani scam deals today.”

At the same time, Former National Assembly clerk and Orange Democratic Movement member Philip Kisia expressed, “I am sad that my party leader Raila Odinga can be led into a suicide mission that may end his stellar political career at a very low with this Adani deal.
Peter Salasya, expressed relief that Raila had not won the presidency, declaring that his support for Adani was a betrayal of the public’s trust.
