Former first lady Jill Biden is opening up for the first time about the emotionally and politically turbulent final weeks of her husband’s presidency, offering a personal account of a period that ultimately ended the political career of former president Joe Biden.
In a forthcoming memoir titled View from the East Wing: A Memoir, set to be published on June 2, Jill Biden reflects on what she describes as both the painful and meaningful moments she experienced during her four years in the White House.
The book marks the first time she has spoken in detail about the intense pressure that surrounded the final weeks of her husband’s 2024 reelection campaign.
Speaking briefly about the project, Jill Biden said writing the memoir helped her process the experience. She described it as “cathartic,” explaining that the pages recount moments that were sometimes difficult but also filled with memories she considers deeply meaningful.
Painful Last Weeks of Joe Biden’s Presidency
The period she refers to centers on the three weeks in 2024 when growing concerns within the Democratic Party about Joe Biden’s health and political viability erupted into a public crisis. At the time, questions about the president’s age and ability to continue serving intensified after a widely criticized debate performance against his opponent, Donald Trump.

During that debate, Biden struggled to complete several arguments and occasionally appeared to lose his train of thought, fueling criticism and sparking renewed discussion about whether he should remain in the race. His aides at the time said he was battling a cold, but doubts within the party and among voters continued to grow.
In the weeks that followed, pressure mounted behind the scenes. Some Democrats publicly urged the president to step aside, fearing the party could face defeat in the upcoming election if he remained the nominee.
Joe Biden initially insisted he would continue his campaign. But after several weeks of internal debate and mounting scrutiny, the then-81-year-old president announced he would withdraw from the race. The decision was revealed in a letter shared online while he was isolating at his home in Delaware after testing positive for COVID-19.
His withdrawal cleared the way for then-Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee. Harris later faced Donald Trump in the 2024 election but ultimately lost.
Challenges of Balancing Work and Family
Although Jill Biden has rarely spoken publicly about those tense weeks, she has indicated that her book will present what she calls a more balanced account of her husband’s presidency. The memoir also touches on broader themes, including the challenge of balancing public service with family life.
During her time as first lady, Jill Biden made history by continuing her professional career while living in the White House. A longtime educator, she continued teaching English and writing at a community college in Northern Virginia, traveling to campus twice a week even while fulfilling the duties of the role.

Beyond her teaching work, she continued advocacy efforts focused on military families, education, cancer research, and women’s health initiatives. The memoir also reflects on key events that shaped the Biden presidency, including the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the political tensions that followed the January 6 Capitol attack.
Joe Biden’s Health Condition
The book arrives as Joe Biden faces a new chapter in his life away from the presidency. In 2025, his office announced that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. Jill Biden said the diagnosis was a shock for the family, but added that doctors expect him to live out his natural life while undergoing treatment.
Now 83, the former president continues to travel occasionally to Washington for meetings and speeches, according to Jill Biden.
Her memoir is expected to provide a rare glimpse into life behind the scenes of the Biden White House, as well as the deeply personal moments that accompanied the closing chapter of one of the longest political careers in modern American history.
