Former Real Madrid and Manchester United Coach Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Serie A team AS Roma following a run of mixed results in the Italian capital.

The former Chelsea coach was sacked by Roma after two-and-half years in charge of the club.

Through a club statement, the team based in Rome, Italy announced that it would be parting ways with the 60-year-old.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club,” read part of the statement.

Additionally, the club went on to wish the Portuguese and his assistants luck in their future endeavors.

The club further acknowledged Mourinho for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club, which saw him lead them to a UEFA Conference League title.

“We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” the statement read.

Roma, who host 18th-placed Verona on Saturday, further noted that updates on the new First Team coaching staff will follow imminently.

The 60-year-old Mourinho took the reins at the Italian club in May 2021, becoming Giallorossi’s 60th coach.

After winning the Conference League in Tirana on May 25th, 2022, he led the team to a UEFA Europa League final loss last season.

The sacking comes amid a run of poor results this season, with AS Roma managing to win just once in their last six Serie A games.

Sitting ninth in the league, the 2023 Europa League finalists were also knocked out of the Coppa Italia by city rivals Lazio.

The Portuguese, whose contract was due to expire in June this year, managed the team for 138 games in charge.

During this run, the Portuguese led the team to 68 wins and 39 losses, with 214 and 143 goals scored and conceded respectively.

Jose joined Roma in 2021 following brief stints in England with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs.

Rise to the Top

The Portuguese, widely recognized as one of the best coaches ever, first came into the limelight during his second stint at home club FC Porto.

Having represented the team as a player, Mourinho returned to Porto as manager in 2002, and led them to winning major titles.

He led the team to two Portuguese Primera Liga titles, a Taca de Portugal, the UEFA cup and the famous UEFA Champions League title in 2003/04.

The Portuguese etched his name in the history books, leading the then underdogs Porto to their first European Cup title since 1987.

Following the success, Mourinho completed a move to England with Chelsea in 2004, with continued success seeing him brand himself as “The Special One” during his young managerial career.

The 69-year-old won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups in his three seasons at the club, amid rivalry from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and the then high-flying Arsenal.

After his departure from England, Jose joined Italian club Inter Milan in 2008 where he won the Italian title twice.

He once again made history, winning a treble of Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League in 2010, a first for an Italian club.

The season also saw him knock-out Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in the semi-finals against all odds.

This made him one of five coaches to have won the European Cup with two clubs.

Real Madrid and England Return

Later that year, the historic milestone saw him win the first FIFA World Coach of the Year, before joining La Liga champions Real Madrid.

In Spain, Mourinho clinched the La Liga title in 2011–12 with a record points tally, becoming the fifth coach to have won league titles in four different countries.

Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 and rejoined Chelsea but was dismissed in 2015 after a poor run of results.

He later had stints at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

However, his tenure at both clubs were short-lived and ended acrimoniously.

Despite this, Mourinho led Tottenham to the final of the League Cup, where he was fired less than a week before the final was played.
