The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has publicly condemned the excessive use of force witnessed during the re-arrest of an accused person within the precincts of the Ruiru Law Courts on Friday, July 4, 2025.
In a statement released on July 5, 2025, the Judiciary stated that the accused had just been released on bond following a court ruling when a team of police officers stormed the court premises to re-arrest the individual.
“The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) registers its deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of the excessive use of force witnessed during the re-arrest of an accused person within the precincts of the Ruiru Law Courts on Friday, 4th July 2025,” read part of the statement.
This follows dramatic scenes that were seen at the Ruiru Law Courts on July 4, where police dramatically re-arrested Peter Kinyanjui just moments after he had been released on bond by the court.
JSC Condemns Police Over Re-Arrest
According to the statement, gunfire was discharged within the court precincts during the re-arrest without a security threat or civil unrest at the time.
While the Commission acknowledges and respects the constitutional mandate of the police to enforce the law and apprehend suspects, it stated that the use of firearms within a court environment is excessive, unjustified, and undermines the authority and dignity of the Judiciary.
“Courts are sacred spaces of constitutional adjudication. They are to be respected, protected and preserved as secure and impartial forums for the administration of justice,” read part of the statement.

The Commission has called on all actors within the justice system to refrain from actions that undermine public confidence in institutions tasked with delivering justice.
“We therefore urge all actors within the justice sector to refrain from acts which erode confidence in the institutions charged with the administration of justice. The sanctity of the court must be preserved at all costs,” ended the statement.

Peter Kinyajui Re-arrested
Anti-terror police officers re-arrested Peter Kinyanjui, who is the youth leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in Kiambu County, outside the Ruiru Law Courts shortly after his release on bond.
Kinyanjui- also known as Kawanjiru is an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who had earlier been arrested over allegations of involvement in the burning of the Kiambu Law Courts during the Gen-Z-led protests held on June 25, 2025.
Kawanjiru’s family tried to intervene and stop the officers from re-arresting him, but their efforts were unsuccessful as the police swiftly escorted him to a waiting vehicle.
During the re-arrest, officers fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd, sparking panic as people fled in different directions.
