Kapsabet High School is a top-performing national boys’ secondary school in Kenya, renowned for its outstanding academic excellence and a proud legacy that spans over 100 years.

The school was founded in 1925 as the Government African Schools (GAS), Kapsabet and is among the oldest high schools in the country.

It was established to cater specifically to African students at a time when education was still racially segregated under British colonial rule.

Over the past century, Kapsabet High School has undergone numerous transformations.

The original school campus now houses Kapsabet High Primary School.

Kapsabet High School’s History

As a provincial school, it was later upgraded to national status. Since 2007, it has consistently maintained a mean grade of B+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), solidifying its place among the country’s academic giants.

The school boasts a distinguished list of alumni, including Kenya’s current President, William Ruto, and the nation’s second President, the late Daniel Arap Moi.

The late President Moi, who was student number 503, demonstrated early leadership qualities during his time at the school in 1941, serving as a school prefect and playing as a defender on the soccer team.

President Ruto, on his part, attended Kapsabet High School for his ‘A’ Levels from Wareng High School in 1985.

He joined Form 5G with the admission number 5,065.

Other notable alumni of Kapsabet High School include former Cabinet Ministers Nicholas Biwott, Kipruto Arap Kirwa and Henry Kosgey.

The Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services, Dr. Richard Belio Kipsang, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, and the 2016 Olympics Javelin silver medallist Julius Yego also studied there.

The current Chief Principal is Kipchumba Maiyo. The school has consistently upheld a strong academic record in KCSE examinations over the years.

Each year, over 400 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.

Performance

Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

However, this was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.

In 2013, Kapsabet High School was ranked 4th nationally in KCSE, improving to 2nd in 2014 and slightly dropping to 5th in 2015.

In 2016, it ranked 15th but bounced back to 8th in 2017 and 4th in 2018. The year 2019 was particularly outstanding, with the school ranked 2nd nationally and producing both the top and third-best students in the country.

This momentum continued as the school secured the 1st position nationally in both 2020 and 2021.

However, it dropped to 18th place in 2022.

In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 494 candidates, with more than 99% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

65 students scored a straight A, while 151 scored an A-. Additionally, 140 students attained a B+, 85 scored a B, while 37 managed a B-.

14 students scored a C+, and the lowest grade recorded was a C, obtained by just two students.

The school’s impressive performance continued in 2024, with candidates achieving a mean score of 10.1457 — a slight dip from the 10.2 recorded in the 2023 KCSE.

School Fees

The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.

Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.

Kapsabet High School was placed in Cluster One (I), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.

However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.

Location and contacts

The school is located in Kapsabet, Nandi County, about 40 kilometres from Eldoret City.
