The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has announced leadership changes at the Kenya Navy (KN). In a statement, KDF said Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Adan Musa has been promoted to be the fourth Navy Sergeant Major (NSM).
His appointment follows the promotion of the previous NSM, WO1 Bwana Haji Omari, to Defence Forces Sergeant Major (DFSM).

“KN witnessed a leadership transition during a ceremony held on October 8, 2024, where Warrant Officer Class One Adan Musa was invested as the fourth Navy Sergeant Major,” reads the statement in part.
The event, presided over by Commander Kenya Navy Major General Paul Otieno, marked a significant moment in WO1 Musa’s long and distinguished military career, which began on April 27, 1988.

Adan Musa Career at KDF
WO1 Musa’s extensive experience includes serving in various roles such as Gunner Operator, Company Sergeant Major at the Defence Forces Recruits Training College, Coxswain, and Seamanship Instructor.
His leadership as NSM officially commenced on September 4, 2024.

During the ceremony, Major General Otieno praised both WO1 Musa and WO1 Haji, acknowledging their contributions to the Kenya Navy.
He emphasized the vital role of the NSM in upholding discipline, unity, and professionalism within the force, calling WO1 Musa the ‘backbone of discipline’ and expressing confidence in his leadership abilities.

WO1 Haji, now the DFSM, reflected on his tenure as NSM, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve and urging his successor to continue prioritizing discipline, loyalty, and integrity.
He praised the dedication of Kenya Navy personnel in safeguarding the nation’s maritime borders, underscoring the importance of strong leadership.
WO1 Musa expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him, pledging to serve his comrades fairly while upholding the core values of the Kenya Navy.
senior naval officials, including the Commander Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Brigadier Abraham Biwott, Chief of Naval Medical Services Brigadier (Dr) Justino Muinde, and Deputy Commander Kenya Navy Fleet Colonel Marcella Aritho, senior officers, officers, Masters -at- Arms and Sailors attended the ceremony.

Kenya Navy Roles
KDF comprises of the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and the Kenya Airforce.
The Navy is tasked with defending Kenya’s territorial integrity from external aggressors.
Other secondary roles of the Navy include protection of merchant ships from piracy, combating drug and human trafficking and delivering relief to stricken Kenyans in drought and flood situations.
The Navy assists and cooperate with other authorities in situations of emergencies and disasters, and to restore peace in any other part of kenya affected by unrest or inability as assigned.
