The Kenya Railways Corporation has increased fare charges for all its trains across the country beginning January 2024.
In a statement dated October 31, the corporation indicated that the fares affected the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, Madaraka Express Commuter Service.
Additionally, the upward fare hikes affected the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, the Kisumu Safari Train and the Nanyuki Safari Train.
However, those making advanced purchases for the Madaraka Express passenger Service were advised to do so within 60 days, noting that the fares would increase from November 1, 2024.
“We wish to inform you that we have reviewed our prices upwards. The new fares come into effect on January 1, 2024.
“Customers making advance purchases for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service will notice the adjusted fares as of November 1, 2023, to take into account the advance ticket purchasing window of 60 days,” the corporation announced.

Reason for Fare Hikes
Further giving reason for the move, the corporation indicated that it was necessitated by the increase in fuel prices across the country.
“This increase is informed by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus affecting the cost of our operations,” added Kenya Railways.
Details of Fare Changes by Kenya Railways
The corporation indicated that passengers using first class from Nairobi to Mombasa will pay Ksh4,500, an increase from the current Ksh3,000.

Moreover, passengers using economy class from Nairobi to Mombasa will pay Ksh1,500 and increase from the current Ksh1,000.
On the other hand, children between the age of 3 to 11 years old who are travelling with adults will pay half fare.
In addition, children over 11 years old will be required to pay the full amount while children below the 3 years old will enjoy the services for free.
Notably, Passengers who ply the Nairobi – Suswa route will be required to pay Ksh250, up from Ksh200 under the new changes.
