The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has issued a notice for patients seeking admission under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
In a statement on July 8, 2025, KNH advised patients to complete the outlined steps promptly to avoid delays or unexpected out-of-pocket expenses.
“SHA will not cover any inpatient costs if the admission was not properly referenced at the time of entry,” read part of the statement.
KNH Issues Guidelines for SHA Coverage
According to KNH, patients must follow the key steps below to ensure eligibility for SHA coverage:
- Carry Your Valid SHA-Registered National Identification Card
Patients have been advised to ensure they have a valid SHA-registered ID with an active SHA membership.
- Obtain a Reference Number from SHA
Additionally, the hospital stated that patients must ensure they have a reference number and a confirmation message from SHA verifying that their visit has been initiated.
- Check Your SHIF Status
If a patient’s SHIF is inactive at the time of admission:
- It must be activated immediately.
- The patient should then return to the Health Information Desk to obtain a new reference number.
- This will enable the patient to benefit from SHA coverage starting from the date the new reference number is issued.

Implementation of SHA Benefits
On October 2, 2024, the hospital announced the successful implementation of the SHA program.
As the national referral hospital and an accredited service provider, the hospital fully operationalized both the Emergency, Critical, and Chronic Illness Fund (ECCIF) and the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) across its inpatient and outpatient services.
“In line with the SHA mandate, KNH has ensured that all patients receive care. This includes seamless admission for inpatient services, clearance of discharged patients, and onboarding new patients for outpatient services,” read part of the notice.

Further, the hospital stated that pre-operative surgeries carried over from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHA were completed, emergency cases attended to, and cancer care services continued as scheduled.
Additionally, since the launch of the SHA program, KNH has successfully provided a wide range of essential medical services. These include:
- MRI scans: 26
- CT scans: 80
- Renal dialysis sessions: 34
- Inpatient admissions: 138
- Chemotherapy sessions: 91
- Radiotherapy sessions: 62
