The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced new enhancements to the Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) application process.

In a statement issued on October 24, KRA announced that the enhanced process will now include compliance with eTIMS/TIMS for non-individual entities and individuals earning income from sources other than employment.

“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wishes to inform the public that the Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) application process has been enhanced to incorporate compliance with eTIMS/TIMS for non-individual entities and for individuals earning income other than from employment,” read part of the statement.

KRA Makes Changes to Tax Compliance Certificate Application Process

Under the new guidelines, taxpayers seeking a TCC must file all applicable tax returns and make payments on or before their due dates.

They are also required to settle any outstanding tax liabilities or obtain an approved payment plan that allows continued access to the self-service TCC application portal.

The Authority further stated that applicants must be VAT compliant, including those listed under the VAT Special Table category.

“KRA remains committed to facilitating tax compliance through stakeholder engagement, taxpayer education, and simplified solutions tailored to meet diverse taxpayer needs,” the notice read in part.

Taxpayers can apply for the certificate through the iTax platform and verify its authenticity using the Certificate Checker available at https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/.

KRA assured taxpayers that any challenges arising during the implementation of the enhanced process will be handled on a case-by-case basis within the existing legal framework.

For further clarification, taxpayers are encouraged to contact KRA through the Contact Centre via telephone numbers 020 4 999 999 or 0711 099 999, email [email protected], or visit the nearest Tax Service Office or Huduma Centre.

What is Tax Compliance Certificate?

Tax Clearance Certificate is an official document issued by KRA, as proof of having filed and paid all your taxes.

KRA issues Tax Compliance Certificates because it is a requirement when:

  • Applying for a job. For jobs however, a TCC is required upon being offered the job.
  • Applying for a government tender
  • Applying for renewal of Work Permit
  • Applying for clearing and forwarding agents license
  • Seeking license to operate a Liquor Store
  • One wants to confirm their compliance status

Enter your KRA PIN and password, then solve the simple arithmetic question displayed on the screen to complete the login process.

After logging in, go to the Certificates section on your iTax dashboard. Click on “Apply for Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC)” to open the application form.

The system will automatically fill in your personal and business details such as your KRA PIN, name, address, and contact information.

Review these details carefully and make any necessary updates, such as changing your phone number or email address.

You will also need to indicate the reason for applying for the certificate, such as for job application, tendering, or compliance verification.

Once you have confirmed that all information is accurate, submit your application by clicking the “Submit” button. KRA will then review your application and provide feedback.

If your tax records are up to date and you have no pending returns, penalties, or tax arrears, your application will be automatically approved.

You will receive a confirmation message stating, “Auto Approval for Tax Compliance Certificate has been submitted successfully,” along with an acknowledgment number and a download link for your certificate.

However, if there are pending issues like unfiled returns or outstanding tax payments, KRA will notify you to resolve them before your certificate can be issued.

I wish KRA would be effective from their end as they want us to be effective. I have been writing letters for them to update my ledger with no vain I have tried even contacting their account department but they keep on referring me to my Branch and it seems they do not know what to do or how to do it. Do they offer the same training to all their employees?

KRA to achieve targets must be flexible towards taxpayers, keep updating and educating in all issues.
Secondly tax has left me wonder is this issue of referring taxpayers to branches to sort out any query. Imagine you are in Mombasa I travel all the way to Eldoret while you have all resources. Look for Safaricom and banks on how to serve customers
