Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the Press Secretary to the President of the Russian Federation, has dismissed reports of a fallout between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Speaking to the press on Friday, November 7, 2025, Peskov stated that the allegations “do not correspond to reality,” adding that Lavrov remained committed to fulfilling his duties as Foreign Minister.
Several media reports had claimed that a phone call between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Lavrov turned “disastrous” after Lavrov maintained a hardline stance on Ukraine, insisting on territorial concessions and neutrality for Kyiv.
The exchange reportedly convinced Washington that Moscow was not genuinely pursuing a diplomatic solution, sparking speculation that Lavrov was being blamed for failed peace efforts and had fallen out of favor with Putin.

Further fueling the rumors was Lavrov’s recent absence from a high-profile Security Council meeting, as well as the fact that Maxim Oreshkin, rather than Lavrov, was chosen to lead Russia’s delegation to the G20 Summit —a role traditionally held by the foreign minister when Putin is unavailable.
The Kremlin’s response comes as Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán prepares to visit the White House on Friday to revive postponed peace talks originally scheduled to take place in Budapest.
Reports indicate that the Budapest meeting was delayed after Lavrov allegedly refused to soften his position on Ukraine during the call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Lavrov, who is currently 75 years old, has served as Russia’s foreign minister since 2004.

Moscow’s response comes amid a renewed push by President Trump for ceasefire talks.
US President Donald Trump has, in the recent past, admitted that he overestimated his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at a press conference on October 29, Trump stated that while he has successfully resolved eight international conflicts since taking office, the Russia-Ukraine war remains unresolved due to his misjudgment of his influence over Putin.
“We’ve resolved eight conflicts. The only one that hasn’t been resolved yet is the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. But that, too, will be done. Absolutely. I thought that would be the easiest thing to do, given my warm relationship with President Putin. It turns out it’s not that simple,” Trump said.
Trump Admits Overestimating His Relationship with Vladimir Putin
The US President reiterated that although the Russia-Ukraine conflict is challenging, he is confident it will eventually be resolved.
On October 26, 2025, Trump announced a new plan for a meeting with Putin after the Budapest meeting was postponed.
