KU Hospital Strike Ends After Resignation of Olive Mugenda

Services have resumed at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) after the resolution of a two-day strike.

The hospital’s staff have called off the strike following the resignation of Professor Olive Mugenda, KUTRRH’s former board chairperson.

The staff, who had been protesting over a lack of clear organizational structure among other grievances, including poor working conditions, have expressed their relief.

According to the medical personnel, non-staff and other employees also demanded the reinstatement of Ahmed Dagane as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

New KU Hospital CEO Takes Charge

Dr Zainab Gura, who was appointed as the Acting CEO by President William Ruto on Tuesday, December 3, has assured the staff that addressing their concerns will be a priority.

The new CEO was appointed after the previously appointed acting CEO, Isaac Kamau, was relieved of his duties.

The strike had disrupted services at the hospital, with critical departments, including outpatient and emergency services, experiencing delays.

However, after Professor Mugenda’s resignation, the hospital’s board was disbanded by the head of state, and efforts to reconstitute it began.

“Following Professor Mugenda’s resignation, and in line with efforts to restore stability and effective governance at KUTRRH, the following decisions have been made.

“The entire KUTRRH Board has been disbanded with immediate effect, and the process of reconstituting it has commenced,” said Ruto in a statement.
