The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO Mercy Wahome has asked 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates who scored grades between C and E to apply for courses in TVET institutions.
In a statement, MS Wahome stated that the placement service had recorded very low applications from D+ and E students urging them to take advantage of the opportunities provided for higher education.
Further, Wahome indicated that KUCCPS had received higher applications for degree programs compared to technical and vocational courses.
As such, the KUCCPS CEO asked the D+ and E students to consult TVET institutions to make the right choices.
“The number of applicants selecting degree programs is higher than those applying for TVET courses so far. KUCCPS encourages those with mean grades between C and E to take advantage of the available TVET opportunities.
“Particularly, applicants with D+ and E are still very low, and we are encouraging them to apply. They should walk into their nearest TVET institution for assistance,” she stated.

KUCCPS Clarification on KCSE Application
At the same time, KUCCPS clarified that only the 2023 candidates could apply for degree programs in universities adding that others could apply for course at the Open University of Kenya (OUK).
“Those from all other can apply for courses offered at the Open University of Kenya, Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions, Teacher Training Colleges and the Kenya Medical Training College,” added the statement.
“We have implemented measures to ensure that applicants are adequately supported. In addition, we are working with Huduma Centres and various universities and colleges to guide applicants,” added the statement.
The placement service opened application of placement of students to universities and colleges on February 7, 2024. However, it extended the application deadline to February 26, 2024.
According to Dr Wahome, no qualified candidate will be left behind.
“The deadline for the ongoing placement application has been extended to February 26, 2024.

“I take this opportunity to assure all those seeking training opportunities through the KUCCPS portal that no one will be left behind,” Dr Wahome said in a statement.
The deadline extension by KUCCPS is a sigh of relief after widespread complaints and uproar from candidates who encountered a myriad of challenges in trying to apply for their preferred courses.
Frustrations During Applications
Many students raised complaints of being unable to access the site, occasioned by its slow response amid a huge traffic as applicants rushed against time to beat the deadline.
However, the placement service started recording positive feedback with students giving testaments of successfully submitting their applications.
