Lecturers from public universities are opposing a proposal to stop funding of public universities by the government.
They are now accusing Education CS Ezekiel Machogu of derailing Kenya Kwanza pledges to the education charter.
Universities academic staff union secretary general Constantine Wasonga warns of an impending crisis in the universities should the proposal come true.
“Is he aware of what the President promised in his education charter? If you are appointed you need to know the manifesto of your coalition,” Wasonga says.
Machogu has put public universities on notice saying they should think of how to generate their own revenue.
The CS says that universities must generate their own income because the exchequer is not going to continue funding them.

Wasonga says President William Ruto made a promise to increase university funding from the current 46 per cent.
“When he was being vetted by MPs he gave us hope but as it stands now there is no hope,” he said.
According to the university Fund, Public universities have debts accumulating to Sh56 billion.
Public universities owe contractors Sh1.4bn, part-time lecturers Sh4.5bn, suppliers Sh4.8bn, and Sacco contributions Sh4.1bn.
They also owe NSSF Sh139m, NHIF Sh2million, loan deductions worth Sh1.3bn, pension schemes Sh18bn and PAYE is owed Sh13bn
Public varsities have accumulated loans worth Sh10bn.
