The Board of Liberty Kenya Holdings has announced the appointment of a new non-executive director.
In a notice dated Thursday, July 17, Liberty Kenya announced the appointment of Richard Etemesi as an independent non-executive director.
Etemesi has been appointed less than a month after stepping down from his role as a Non-Executive Director at Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited
“The Board of Directors of Liberty Kenya Holdings PLC (the ‘Company’) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Richard Etemesi as an independent non-executive director of the Company, subject to approval by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA),” the notice read in part.

The Board congratulated Etemesi on his appointment, welcomed him to the Board, and wished him every success in his new role.

He brings more than 34 years of local and international experience in financial services across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, having served in both executive and board capacities.
Richard Etemesi is also actively involved in coaching and mentoring young fintech founders and high-potential executives.
He currently serves as a director of Mulinga Coffee Estate Limited and Dazzler Properties Limited and is also a Governor of the Capital Club East Africa.
Richard Etemesi began his professional career as a Senior Projects Manager at the Kenya Tourist Development Corporation (KTDC), serving between 1986 and 1988.
He later joined Coopers & Lybrand Associates in Kenya as a Financial Management Consultant before moving to Standard Chartered Financial Services in July 1991 in a similar capacity.
Richard’s senior leadership journey at Standard Chartered Bank began in April 1994, when he was appointed Head of Global Corporate Banking in Nairobi.
Etemesi Career Journey
From June 1997 to June 2000, he served as Executive Director for Corporate & Institutional Banking in Lusaka, Zambia.
He later became Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Uganda, based in Kampala, from July 2000 to December 2004.
Between January 2004 and October 2007, Richard held the dual roles of Chief Financial Officer and Finance & Strategy Director for Kenya and East Africa.

From November 2007 to December 2013, he was the Chief Executive Officer for Kenya and East Africa, based in Nairobi.
Following this, he served as Chief Executive Officer for South and Southern Africa, stationed in Johannesburg, from January 2014 to August 2017, where he was responsible for driving growth and development across the region.
Since September 2017, Richard has served as Vice Chairman for Africa, operating out of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Etemesi holds an MSc in Financial Studies from the University of Strathclyde and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi.
