Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya’s security has been withdrawn, with opposition group Linda Mwananchi condemning the move and describing it as an attack on democratic governance ahead of a commemoration event for the late Raila Odinga.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, the group said it was concerned by the reported withdrawal of the governor’s security, arguing that Natembeya is a duly elected county chief who deserves protection as he carries out his official duties.
The group claimed the move came just a day before leaders and supporters were due to gather to remember Raila, popularly known as Baba, and questioned the timing of the decision.
“We strongly condemn the withdrawal of Governor George Natembeya’s security by the State,” the statement said.
Linda Mwananchi argued that Raila, who spent decades championing democratic reforms, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, would have openly opposed such action if he were alive.
The group said Raila consistently defended democratic institutions and believed elected leaders should serve without intimidation or interference.
According to the statement, the alleged withdrawal of the governor’s security showed disregard for the values Raila stood for throughout his political career.
Natembeya Demands Explanation
Governor George Natembeya later confirmed that his security had been withdrawn and called on authorities to explain the decision, arguing that any action affecting his security must comply with the Constitution and the rule of law.
In a statement on Thursday, the governor cited Article 47 of the Constitution, which guarantees lawful, reasonable and procedurally fair administrative action, and said he was entitled to written reasons if his rights or freedoms were affected.

Natembeya also pointed to constitutional provisions governing national security and the conduct of the National Police Service, insisting that security decisions must be made professionally and in accordance with the law.
“Let me be clear. I do not claim immunity from lawful security reviews. What I insist upon is that any such review must be conducted professionally, objectively and in accordance with the Constitution, without discrimination or improper political influence,” he said.
The governor said he was particularly concerned because it was the second time his security had allegedly been withdrawn and called on the Inspector-General of the National Police Service to provide a formal explanation and clarify whether proper procedures had been followed.
He also referenced a June 2025 High Court ruling on the withdrawal of security assigned to governors, arguing that the court had already held that such decisions must include notice, reasons, and an opportunity to be heard.
Natembeya maintained that he would continue serving the people of Trans Nzoia and defending constitutionalism despite the controversy, adding that no exercise of public power is above the law.
Natembeya’s Growing Row With Ruto
The security withdrawal comes at a time when Governor George Natembeya is locked in an increasingly public dispute with President William Ruto over development projects in Trans Nzoia.
Tensions escalated after Natembeya skipped the President’s tour of the county which began on October 10, prompting a sharp exchange between the two leaders.
During the visit, Ruto accused the governor of frustrating key projects, including the completion of Endebess Hospital and developments at Kenyatta Stadium, while also criticizing the governor’s Tawe movement.
Natembeya responded by accusing the President of using government development projects for political gain ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He also objected to plans by the national government to commission a modern market in Kitale, arguing that the facility was financed by the county government with support from the World Bank and that the State was taking credit for work it did not fund.
The governor further accused the national government of undermining devolution by interfering in functions that fall under county governments.
Raila’s Legacy Invoked
Linda Mwananchi used the statement to reflect on Raila’s legacy, saying the late opposition leader inspired and mentored many leaders across generations.
It argued that attempts to undermine leaders associated with his political ideals would not erase his influence on the country’s democratic journey.
“They may try to erase or rewrite his history, but we will remain keen to ensure that his true values, principles and foundational ideals are forever remembered,” the group said.
Linda Mwananchi also described Natembeya, popularly known among supporters as “Commando,” as one of the leaders who embodies the courage and determination associated with Raila’s style of politics.

The group noted that Natembeya launched his Tawe movement while Raila was still alive and said the initiative reflected a commitment to governance anchored on justice, accountability and adherence to the law.
Linda Mwananchi Vows to Remain Defiant
The statement ended with a declaration that the organisation would continue supporting leaders it believes are committed to defending the interests of ordinary Kenyans.
Linda Mwananchi insisted that it would not be intimidated by political developments and would remain vocal on issues it considers important to democracy and the rule of law.
The group also paid tribute to Raila, expressing confidence that the leaders he mentored would continue advancing the ideals he championed during his public life.
“We remain unbowed, now more than ever. Keep resting, Jakom. You left us in many safe hands,” the statement concluded.
