Former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Secretary General and “Echoes of War” playwright Cleophas Malala has announced nationwide auditions for the play.
This comes days after he emphasised that the production would feature top adult actors selected from across the country, who will showcase the play at a public event.
The announcement was made in a video posted on Wednesday, April 23, calling on actors interested in participating to submit their applications.
Aspiring actors are required to review the script on Malala’s TikTok page, select a character they wish to portray, and then record a 30-second video of themselves performing that role.
Echoes of War auditions
Applicants must post the video on Instagram and TikTok, tagging @Cleomalalah254 and @Echoesofwar254.
“If you are an actor, love the stage, and have the confidence to own a role, this is your moment,” read part of the announcement.
Auditions are scheduled to take place from April 22 to May 5, 2025.
The announcement comes days after Malala maintained that the Echoes of War play will be produced with an adult cast.
Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, the former Kakamega Senator said the play’s script will soon be posted on social media, making it accessible to all Kenyans to access.
“We are going to put the scripts on the social media platforms, and anybody can enact it and upload it on TikTok,” he said at the time.
“We will be able to get you and identify talent. This is going to be a Kenyan play. We are going to act out this play using Kenyan artists even in the remotest villages.”

Malala says Butere Girls will be honored
The former UDA Secretary General at the same time said that the Butere Girls High School students who were meant to perform the play during this year’s Kenya National Drama and Film Festival (KNDFF) should be honored, despite the call for adult auditions.
Butere Girls students did not perform in the festivals held in Nakuru County as chaos marred the event.
The students were forced to boycott their act in the event where the public and journalists were blocked from accessing the venue at the Melvin Jones Academy.
According to Malala, the students will receive a percentage of the proceeds of that play enacted by an adult cast.
“We are going to enact this play with an adult cast. But at the same time, we must honour the young girls of Butere Girls High School,” he added.
“A percentage of the proceeds of that play must go to those girls because they are heroines and will be inscribed in history.”

The former Kakamega Senator further hit out at his critics, questioning why he opted to use students for the play, noting that they are part of the liberation journey.
He recalled South Africa’s Sarafina of 1976, noting that students started the liberation journey.
“Therefore, there is nothing wrong with students taking part in politics or in creating and crafting their future,” he said.
