Martha Karua has publicly defended her role in the controversial 2007 presidential election, stating she has “no regrets” over her actions.
In an interview with NTV on May 19, 2025, Karua addressed long-standing accusations regarding the election’s legitimacy and her involvement in the subsequent events.
“I was at KICC; no power went out. We were there all night verifying the results,” Karua asserted, countering claims that the election process was marred by irregularities and manipulation.
Karua refuted claims that there was an engineered power outage that many have cited as evidence of manipulation in the election.
Karua on ‘Steal’ Elections in 2007 Allegations
Addressing the persistent allegations, Karua challenged her critics to prove the narrative.
“These tales are old, tired narratives, and I always ask, what specific crime do you charge me with?” she questioned the timing and motivations behind the accusations, suggesting that those now pointing fingers were not present during the events in question.
Reflecting on the post-election violence that followed the disputed results, Karua acknowledged the gravity of the situation but maintained her stance.

“Those who went to the ICC were charged with crimes against humanity,” she noted, referencing the six individuals who faced charges at the International Criminal Court for their roles in the violence that led to over 1,200 deaths and the displacement of more than 100,000 people.
Credibility of the Accusation
Karua further questioned the accusations against her after all those years.
“It can’t be that those who investigated when it was fresh missed out Martha Karua, but some years later, somebody who wasn’t there now knows it was Martha Karua,” she said.
This implied that the renewed allegations lacked substantiated evidence and were politically motivated.
Despite the controversies surrounding the 2007 election, Karua remains steadfast in her defense, asserting her actions were in line with legal and constitutional obligations.
Karua Denied Entry into Tanzania
This comes after on Sunday, May 18, Karua was denied entry into Tanzania together with two Kenyan colleagues who accompanied her.
Karua in a statement said she had been kept waiting for over an hour after she arrived at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

Karua had led the Pan-African Progressive Leaders Solidarity Network in calling for the release of Tundu Lissu, Tanzania’s opposition leader, and the dropping of the “politically motivated charges” brought against him.
The opposition leader was charged with treason a day after he was arrested following a rally he held in south Tanzania.
Additionally, Karua on April 24 led the pan-African rights lobby in maintaining that the treason charges against the chairperson of Tanzania’s leading opposition party Chadema, signal an alarming escalation of repression by the ruling CCM administration led by President Samia Suluhu.
“As a member of the African Union (AU), the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Tanzania is bound by foundational commitments to uphold the rule of law, democracy, and human dignity. The current administration’s conduct flagrantly contradicts these obligations,” Karua said in a statement.
