The journey of Charles Kahariri through the ranks of the Kenya Defence Forces is one defined by dedication and a commitment to his country.
From his early days as an enlisted soldier to his recent appointment as Chief of the Defence Forces, Kahariri remains a distinguished figure in the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).
Born and raised in Kenya, Charles Muriu Kahariri’s journey into the military begun when he was enlisted in the Kenya Defense Forces in 1987. He would then embark on a path that would see him rise through the ranks with distinction.
General Kahariri Assignments and Training
His ascent within the KDF was marked by a series of challenging assignments and rigorous training, both at home and abroad.
His tenure and experience in Kenya Navy division honed his operational skills, while his command roles at various levels showcased his ability to lead under pressure and navigate military operations with precision.
However, it was Kahariri’s role as Task Force Commander in “Operation Sledge Hammer” that etched his name into the annals of KDF military history.
Tasked with capturing the strategic port city of Kismayo in Somalia under the Operation Linda Nchi, Kahariri was part of KDF’s team credited for its tactical brilliance that was instrumental in the success of the operation.

Under Kahariri’s command, KDF forces executed a planned assault on Kismayu, targeting key strategic locations and disrupting enemy supply lines.
Through coordinated air, land, and sea operations, the forces swiftly gained control of the city, dealing a blow to insurgent groups and restoring stability to the region.
Beyond his role in “Operation Sledge Hammer,” Kahariri has represented Kenya on the international stage, contributing to regional security efforts and fostering partnerships with allied nations.

His dedication to professional development is evident in his extensive training portfolio, which includes courses in strategic planning, leadership, and maritime operations from renowned institutions around the world.
Among the courses the new CDF has taken include International Midshipman Course (UK), Long Navigation Course (India), Management and Strategic Planning Course, Naval Command Course (USA), Joint Campaign Planning, Flag Level Combined Maritime Component Command Course (Italy), Senior Strategic Leadership Course (UK) and Executive Development Course (University of N/Carolina, USA).

He also holds a Diploma in Strategic and Security Studies from the United States Naval War College.
Lt Gen Kahariri is a recipient of various honors and awards including Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) being his most recent accolade.
He is married and blessed with three children and a grandson.
