Late Kenyan President Daniel Moi was awarded the Akufo-Addo Africa Democracy Award in recognition of his lifetime devotion to education, public service, and environmental stewardship.
The award also recognized his role as a Pan-Africanist who strengthened regional cooperation and contributed to East African diplomacy.
The Democracy Union of Africa (DUA) presented the awards during its 2025 forum in Nairobi, which brought together political leaders from across the continent to discuss governance, democracy, and Africa’s role on the global stage.
Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu and Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye, who were also named recipients, sent representatives to accept their awards.
Both leaders urged continued advocacy for democracy and the rule of law in their respective countries.
“There is no justice and civil liberties when opposition voices are jailed, when dissent is criminalized, and when court rulings are ignored,” said DUA Chairperson Louisa Atta-Agyemang.

“Now, I call on the governments of Tanzania and Uganda to uphold the rule of law, respect human rights, and release all those detained. Across Africa, state machinery is being weaponized against those who dare speak the truth to power.”
Gideon Moi on His Father Awarded
KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, son of the late president, expressed pride in the recognition.
“The world is no longer defined by a single dominant power but by many centers of influence,” he said.
“In this multipolar reality, Africa must not be a spectator, but a strategic player by asserting its interests, redefining its partnerships, and shaping the terms of its engagement.”
He stated the global challenges facing democracies, including the rise of radical populism and extreme nationalism.
“That is why we are immensely proud and deeply honored that DUA chose Nairobi to host this year’s forum,” he said.
“On behalf of KANU and the people of Kenya, allow me to express our profound gratitude to the chairperson and your able team for this vote of confidence.”
Also present was former Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, who explained the need for African political parties to collaborate beyond national boundaries.

“There is urgent need for African political parties to rise above national boundaries and forge strong, issue-based partnerships that amplify Africa’s collective voice in global negotiations, particularly with Europe,” he said.
