Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway are facing renewed security concerns following reports of a daylight attack involving a group of men who allegedly targeted vehicles along the busy highway.
A video circulating online, as seen by The Kenya Times, shows a group of men approaching motorists and allegedly taking belongings from occupants of vehicles that had slowed down.
The incident was reported on September 3 and has raised questions about security on the controlled-access highway.
The footage appears to show more than six men, some of them hooded, operating from a vehicle along the Expressway’s service lane before approaching motorists.
According to reports, the group stopped one vehicle and allegedly robbed its occupants before moving towards another vehicle. They were then reportedly seen leaving the scene in their own vehicle.
Expressway Incident Sparks Concern
The incident has generated concern because the Nairobi Expressway is a controlled-access toll road equipped with surveillance infrastructure and toll stations.
One Kenyan, Hamid Abdul, questioned the deteriorating security situation in the country and whether motorists are adequately protected on major roads.
“Our country has become very unsafe, worst thing the leaders in charge of security are very busy developing their businesses and flying around in choppers while our country’s security is deteriorating,” said Hamid .
Another social media user, Moja Benjamin, questioned how such an incident could occur on the Expressway, which is expected to provide a safer and faster route for motorists.

“Is this in Kenya and under your watch? If the Expressway, which is by all reason expected to be the safest path because it is premium and fast, can have goons, where then is safe? It’s time you fellas got serious with your work,” stated Benjamin.
Murima Maestro expressed concern over the incident, questioning whether motorists were still safe under the current administration. He said the alleged attacks showed criminals were becoming increasingly bold, even targeting people in broad daylight on the Expressway.
Another Kenyan raised similar concerns, saying that the incident was worrying because the Expressway is a major highway with police presence and several toll stations. The user asked how criminals could openly target motorists on a road expected to have heightened security and monitoring.
The Mlolongo and Syokimau sections have previously experienced unrest and security incidents.
They are notorious and risky, especially during protests.
Moja Expressway Dismisses Viral Video
Moja Expressway Company, the private operator of the Nairobi Expressway, has denied that the viral video that circulated on September 3, showing several people gathered around vehicles on the highway, depicted a robbery.
The company said the incident was instead a brief logistics stop involving a convoy of politicians who were leaving a nearby function.

According to the company’s tracking and traffic-monitoring data, the two vehicles captured in the image belonged to the delegation.
Moja Expressway said the convoy briefly stopped along the Expressway to allow some of the occupants to switch vehicles before proceeding with their journey.
Security officials also investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident after the image sparked claims that motorists had been attacked.
Central Police Station OCPD Patrick Gogo reportedly launched searches across several police stations to establish whether any motorists had reported being robbed, while Nairobi Regional DCI boss Daniel Kandie led a parallel investigation.
The searches reportedly failed to identify any robbery complaint matching the incident, with authorities finding no victim who had reported being robbed at the location.
A registration check through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) system also helped investigators trace one of the motorists whose vehicle appeared in the background of the image.
Other CBD Streets Where Motorists Report Goon Attacks
Globe Roundabout has emerged as one of the latest locations to attract attention after footage circulated showing two men attacking and robbing a woman in broad daylight.
The men appeared to overpower the woman before taking her belongings and fleeing.
In August, another video raised concern after suspected thieves were seen following foreign tourists in Nairobi’s CBD, prompting people accompanying the visitors to move them to safety.
Nairobi County officials have also previously raised concerns about theft targeting motorists stuck in traffic.
In May, Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria said he personally witnessed a group of thieves forcefully remove a spare part from a motorist’s vehicle in the CBD before fleeing.
