Details and Construction Timelines for the 25 Feeder Roads

From the KeNHA tender document, the construction of the 25 feeder roads planned under the Nairobi Western Bypass project is expected to take 36 months (three years) to complete.

The Nairobi Western Bypass project involves upgrading the roads to bitumen standard, with a 7-meter-wide carriageway and 1.5-meter shoulders on both sides.

Plans also include drainage works such as side ditches, box culverts and pipe culverts, together with the installation of road signs, thermoplastic markings, raised curbs, guardrails and zebra crossings.

After completion, the contractor will be required to maintain the roads during a 24-month defects notification period.

The Nairobi Western Bypass (Gitaru–Ruaka)

The Nairobi Western Bypass (Gitaru–Ruaka) is the fourth and final section of Nairobi’s ring-road network, built to divert through-traffic from the city center and ease congestion along the Nairobi–Nakuru corridor.

This bypass starts at Gitaru, near Kikuyu town, where it connects to the Nairobi Southern Bypass and the Nairobi–Nakuru highway, and ends at Ruaka, where it connects to the Nairobi Northern Bypass.

Stretching approximately 16.5 kilometres, the road passes through Gitaru, Wangige, Kihara, Ndenderu, Rumenyi and Ruaka, with more than 17 kilometres of service roads constructed alongside the main carriageway.

The dual carriageway features major interchanges, service roads, pedestrian walkways, cycle tracks in selected sections, pedestrian crossings, noise barriers, improved drainage systems and a bus park at Wangige.
